Improving Sensory at Home: Activities for Your Child

You can support sensory development at home through playful daily routines — movement, deep pressure, touch and calming sound — led by your child and kept joyful. Aim for regulation and comfort, not 'fixing'. Seek a developmental check if sensory responses disrupt sleep, eating, dressing or play.

Improving Sensory at Home for Your Child — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

When the world feels too loud, too bright or too still for your child, gentle everyday play can help their senses settle — and home is the perfect place to begin.

In short

You can support your child's sensory development at home through simple, playful daily routines that give their body the right amount of movement, touch, sound and pressure. The aim is regulation and comfort, not 'fixing' — follow your child's lead, keep it joyful, and notice what calms or excites them. These ideas complement, and never replace, guidance from your child's therapist.

Activities you can try at home

Movement & balance (vestibular)
  • Slow swinging, rocking in your lap, or gentle spinning — watch their face and stop before overwhelm
  • Animal walks: bear crawls, frog jumps, crab walks across the room

Deep pressure & body awareness (proprioception)

  • Bear hugs, rolling your child snugly in a blanket 'burrito'
  • Pushing or carrying safe heavy items — a laundry basket, cushions
  • 'Squishes' with pillows, or pressing palms together

Touch (tactile)

  • A bin of rice, lentils or dry pasta to scoop and pour
  • Finger painting, dough, shaving foam, water play
  • Let them explore different textures at their own pace — never force

Sound & sight

  • Quiet corners with soft light for when things feel too much
  • Calming music, or naming everyday sounds together

Keep sessions short, predictable and led by your child. A calm body learns best.

When to seek guidance

If sensory responses regularly disrupt sleep, eating, dressing or play, or your child is very distressed by everyday sounds, textures or movement, it is worth a developmental check. An occupational therapist can build a personalised plan suited to your child's profile through occupational therapy.

What to watch

Seek timely guidance if sensory reactions regularly disrupt sleep, eating, dressing or play, or if your child is highly distressed by everyday sounds, textures or movement across different settings.

Try this at home

Try a daily 'heavy work' moment — let your child push a laundry basket or carry cushions. This deep-pressure input often calms and organises a busy body before quieter tasks.

Frequently asked

What is sensory play?

Sensory play is any activity that engages your child's senses — touch, movement, balance, sound, sight, taste or smell. Think rice bins, finger painting, swinging or blanket squishes. It helps children explore the world comfortably and learn to regulate their bodies.

How long should home sensory activities last?

Keep them short and led by your child — a few minutes at a time is plenty for younger children. Watch their face: stop before they become overwhelmed or overly excited. Predictable, gentle and joyful sessions work best.

Can home activities replace therapy?

No. Home activities are a wonderful complement, but they do not replace professional care. An occupational therapist can assess your child's unique sensory profile and build a tailored plan. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre.
