Gesture Communication

Working on Gesture Communication at Home

Build gesture communication at home by modelling gestures (wave, point, reach), creating reasons to communicate (toys out of reach, offering choices, pausing fun games), using action songs and simple signs, and responding warmly to every attempt with a word — little and often.

Gesture Communication at Home: A Parent's Guide — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Long before words arrive, your child is already talking — with their hands, their eyes, their whole little body. Gestures are the bridge to speech, and your living room is the best place to build it.

In short

Gesture communication — waving, pointing, reaching, showing, clapping — is one of the strongest predictors of spoken language, and you can nurture it through warm, playful daily moments. The aim is simple: give your child reasons to gesture, model gestures yourself, and respond every single time they try. Little and often beats long and formal.

Everyday activities that build gestures

Model, then pause and wait
  • Wave big and slow at every hello and bye-bye, then pause — give your child a few seconds to copy.
  • Point to interesting things together — birds, lights, the dog — and name them. Shared pointing ("look at that!") is a key milestone.
  • Reach up and say "up!" before lifting your child, so the gesture and word travel together.

Create reasons to communicate

  • Place a favourite toy or snack just out of reach so your child must point or reach to ask — then respond instantly.
  • Offer choices held in each hand ("banana or biscuit?") so they point or look to choose.
  • Pause a fun activity — tickles, bubbles, a song with actions — and wait for a gesture that says "more!"

Build it into routines and play

  • Action songs like Twinkle Twinkle and Wheels on the Bus pair gestures with rhythm and repetition.
  • Use simple signs alongside speech — "more", "all done", "eat", "sleep". Signing does not delay talking; it supports it.
  • Clap, blow kisses, do high-fives and "so big!" — celebrate every attempt warmly.

Respond like every gesture matters — because it does
When your child reaches, points or waves, treat it as real communication: name it, act on it, and add a word. "You're pointing — that's the cat! Hello, cat." This back-and-forth is what turns gestures into words.

When to check in

Most children use clear gestures like pointing and waving by around 12 months. If your child shows little pointing, waving or showing by 12–15 months, isn't combining gestures with sounds, or seems to use fewer gestures than before, a friendly developmental check is worthwhile — not a cause for alarm, just a sensible next step. Pair any concern with a routine hearing check too.

What to watch

Note if your child shows little pointing, waving or showing by 12–15 months, doesn't pair gestures with sounds, or uses fewer gestures than before — these warrant a friendly developmental check alongside a hearing review.

Try this at home

Pause mid-fun — stop tickles, bubbles or a song — and wait a few seconds. That little gap gives your child a reason to gesture for 'more', and every gesture they make is a step towards words.

Frequently asked

At what age do children usually start using gestures?

Most children begin reaching and showing in the first year, and use clear gestures like pointing and waving by around 12 months. Gestures appear before first words and help speech develop, so encouraging them early is valuable.

Will using signs and gestures delay my child's talking?

No. Research and clinical experience show that pairing simple signs and gestures with spoken words supports language — it gives your child a way to communicate while speech is developing, and tends to encourage talking, not delay it.

My toddler points but doesn't say words yet. Should I be worried?

Pointing is a great sign — it shows your child is sharing attention and communicating. Keep naming what they point to and adding words. If words haven't started emerging over time, a friendly developmental check can offer reassurance and guidance.

How much time should I spend on gesture activities each day?

Little and often works best. Short, playful moments woven through everyday routines — meals, bath, play, songs — are far more effective than long, formal sessions. A few minutes many times a day adds up.
