Functional Communication Training

Functional Communication Training at Home

Functional Communication Training at home means spotting what your child is trying to tell you through behaviour, then teaching one easy word, sign or picture that gets the same result fast — honoured immediately, modelled in calm play, and practised through everyday routines.

Functional Communication Training at Home — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Every time your child finds a way to tell you what they need — a word, a sign, a picture — a moment of frustration becomes a moment of connection.

In short

Functional Communication Training (FCT) simply means teaching your child a clear, easy way to ask for what they want — instead of crying, grabbing or melting down. You can support this at home by spotting what your child is trying to 'tell' you, then gently teaching a simple word, sign, picture or gesture that gets the same result, fast. Done warmly and consistently, it lowers frustration for everyone.

Try these at home

1. Notice the message behind the behaviour. When your child cries, points or pulls your hand — pause and ask yourself: what do they want right now? More juice? To stop? Your attention? That want is the thing you'll teach them to ask for.

2. Offer one easy replacement. Pick a simpler way to ask — a single word ("more"), a sign, a picture card, or a tap on a tablet. Keep it small enough that your child can succeed today, not next month.

3. Honour the request immediately. The first few weeks, the moment your child uses the new word or sign, give them what they asked for straight away. Fast success teaches your child that communicating works — better than the old behaviour did.

4. Model it before they need it. Say or show the word during calm play ("open!" as you open a bubble jar) so it's familiar before the high-pressure moment.

5. Use real daily routines. Snack time, bath time, getting dressed, going outside — these repeat every day and give dozens of natural chances to practise asking.

6. Keep it joyful and low-pressure. Follow your child's interest, celebrate every attempt, and never withhold to force a word. The goal is a child who wants to communicate.

When to ask for guidance

If your child has very few ways to communicate, often hurts themselves or others in frustration, or the behaviour isn't easing after a few patient weeks, a speech-language therapist can tailor an FCT plan and choose the right communication tool for your child. This is especially worthwhile if you're unsure which replacement to teach first.

The Pinnacle way

A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under qualified clinician care — never from an online guide. What to watch

Watch for the moment your child uses the new word, sign or picture instead of crying or grabbing — honour it instantly. If frustration behaviours (hitting, self-harm) are frequent or aren't easing after a few patient weeks, seek a speech-language therapist's guidance.

Try this at home

At snack time, hold a desired food just out of reach and wait — the moment your child uses any agreed word, sign or picture for 'more', give it straight away with a big smile.

Frequently asked

What does Functional Communication Training actually mean?

It means teaching your child a clear, easy way to ask for what they want — a word, sign, picture or gesture — to replace frustration behaviours like crying, grabbing or melting down. The new way must work just as quickly as the old behaviour did.

How quickly should I respond when my child uses the new word or sign?

In the early weeks, respond immediately. Fast success teaches your child that communicating works better than the old behaviour, which makes the new skill stick faster.

What if my child can't speak yet?

FCT doesn't require speech. Signs, picture cards, gestures or a simple tablet app all count as communication. A speech-language therapist can help choose the right tool for your child.

When should I involve a therapist?

If your child has very few ways to communicate, frequently hurts themselves or others in frustration, or the behaviour isn't easing after a few patient weeks, a speech-language therapist can build a tailored plan with you.
