Expressive Needs

Working on Expressive Needs at Home

Grow your child's expressive needs at home through everyday back-and-forth play: offer real choices, pause and wait for any response, narrate daily routines, and add one word to whatever your child says. Gestures, sounds, signs and picture cards all count as real communication.

Growing Expressive Needs at Home — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Every time your child reaches, points, or hums to ask for something, they are telling you they want to be understood — and your kitchen, your sofa, your bath time are the best language classrooms there are.

In short

Expressive needs — your child's ability to share wants, feelings and ideas — grow fastest through warm, everyday back-and-forth play, not formal drills. The strongest home strategies are simple: pause and wait for your child to communicate, narrate what you both do, and offer real choices so they have a reason to respond. Any communication counts — a gesture, a sound, a sign, a picture or a word.

Activities you can do at home

Build the reason to communicate
  • Offer choices, not everything at once. Hold up two snacks and wait — "juice or milk?" A reach, point or sound is a win; respond instantly so the child learns that communicating works.
  • Pause and wait. Count silently to five after you ask or offer. That gap gives your child room to take their turn instead of you filling it.
  • Put favourites in sight but out of reach (a clear jar, a high shelf) so your child must ask — by any means — to get them.

Model the next step up

  • Narrate the day. "We're washing hands… warm water… all done!" Hearing words mapped onto actions builds the vocabulary your child will later use.
  • Add one word. If your child says "car," you say "red car" or "car go." Always stay just one step ahead of where they are.
  • Accept every channel. Gestures, pointing, signs, picture cards (AAC) and first sounds are all real expression — honour them and gently model the spoken word alongside.

Make it playful and repeatable

  • Use songs with a clear pause ("Twinkle twinkle little…") and wait for your child to fill the gap.
  • Read the same favourite books often; familiar words invite your child to join in.

When to seek a check

Home strategies are powerful, but they work best alongside guidance if you have concerns. Consider a speech and language assessment if by around 18 months your child uses very few words or gestures, if there is loss of words already learned, or if your own worry simply persists. Early support is gentle and effective — a check is reassurance, not a verdict.

What to watch

Seek a speech and language check if by around 18 months your child uses very few words or gestures, if previously learned words are lost, or if your concern persists — early support is gentle and reassuring.

Try this at home

Put a favourite snack in a clear jar your child can see but not open — then pause. Any reach, sound or point is communication; respond instantly so they learn that asking works.

Frequently asked

What does "expressive needs" actually mean?

Expressive needs are your child's ability to share their wants, feelings and ideas with others — through any channel, including gestures, sounds, signs, picture cards or spoken words. Working on them means giving your child more reasons and ways to communicate.

Do gestures and pointing count, or only spoken words?

Gestures, pointing, signs, picture cards and first sounds are all genuine expression and important steps. Honour each one by responding straight away, and gently model the spoken word alongside so your child has the next step to grow into.

How much time a day should I spend on these activities?

There is no fixed amount — the best practice is woven into things you already do, like meals, bath time and reading. A few mindful pauses and choices scattered through the day are far more powerful than one long formal session.

When should I ask a professional for help?

Consider a speech and language check if by around 18 months your child uses very few words or gestures, if words already learned have been lost, or if your worry persists. A check is reassurance and early guidance, not a diagnosis.
