Working on Daily Interactive With Your Child at Home

Daily Interactive means turning everyday moments — meals, bath, dressing — into back-and-forth exchanges. Follow your child's lead, narrate, pause to let them respond, and match plus add one word. A few joyful minutes many times a day builds communication better than one long session.

Some of the most powerful therapy doesn't happen in a therapy room — it happens at your kitchen table, on the floor with the blocks, in the small moments you already share every day.

In short

Daily Interactive simply means turning ordinary moments — meals, bath time, getting dressed, walking to the shop — into back-and-forth exchanges with your child. You don't need toys or a special hour; you need to follow your child's lead, narrate what you both do, and pause to let them respond. A few minutes, many times a day, builds communication and connection far better than one long session.

How to work on it at home

Build it into what you already do
  • Narrate the moment — "We're washing your hands. Warm water! All clean." Your child hears language tied to what they see and feel.
  • Follow their lead — notice what they look at or reach for, then talk about that. Shared interest is where learning sticks.
  • Pause and wait — after you speak or ask, count slowly to five in your head. That silence gives your child the space to look, gesture, sound out or speak.
  • Match and add one — if they say "car", you say "red car". If they point, you name it. Always offer just a little more than they gave.

Make it truly two-way

  • Get face-to-face, at their eye level, so smiles and gestures land.
  • Take turns like a gentle game — your turn, their turn — with sounds, peekaboo, rolling a ball, or stacking blocks.
  • Celebrate any response — a glance, a babble, a point all count as your child "talking back".

Keep it light

  • Five good minutes beats a forced thirty. Stop while it's still fun.
  • Repeat favourites — children learn through joyful repetition, not novelty.

When to check in

If your child rarely makes eye contact, isn't responding to their name, or isn't gesturing or sounding back during these everyday exchanges, it's worth a gentle developmental check — not to worry, but to understand where they are and how to help them flourish.

What to watch

If your child rarely makes eye contact, doesn't respond to their name, or isn't gesturing or sounding back during everyday exchanges across a few weeks, arrange a gentle developmental check.

Try this at home

Pick one routine — say, hand-washing — and narrate it, then pause five full seconds for any response. Repeat it daily; consistency beats length.

Frequently asked

How much time should I spend on Daily Interactive each day?

There's no fixed minimum. Short bursts of a few minutes, repeated across the day's natural routines, work far better than one long session. Quality and warmth matter more than the clock.

Do I need special toys or materials?

No. The best materials are the everyday moments you already share — meals, bath, dressing, walks. Your face, voice and attention are the most powerful tools your child has.

My child doesn't respond when I talk. Should I keep going?

Yes — keep narrating and pausing to leave space. A glance, a babble or a gesture all count as responses. If your child rarely responds over several weeks, arrange a developmental check for reassurance and guidance.
