How to Work on Crawling With Your Child at Home

Encourage crawling at home with daily tummy time, face-to-face floor play, and favourite toys placed just out of reach. Crawling has a wide normal window — roughly 7 to 10 months — and some babies skip it entirely yet walk on time. Check in if your baby isn't bearing weight on their legs by around 9 to 10 months, seems very stiff or floppy, or loses a skill.

How to Help Your Baby Crawl — At Home — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Crawling isn't just about getting from A to B — it's how your baby builds strength, coordination and the cross-body wiring that later powers walking, balance and even reading.

In short

You can absolutely encourage crawling at home through daily tummy time, playful floor games and tempting toys placed just out of reach. The single most powerful thing you can give your child is plenty of safe, supervised floor time on their tummy from early on. Crawling has a wide normal window — many babies crawl between 7 and 10 months, and some skip it altogether and still walk on time.

Easy activities you can do at home

Build the foundation — tummy time
  • Start with short, frequent sessions on a firm, clean floor and build up as your baby gets stronger.
  • Lie down face-to-face with them, or place a mirror in front — your face is the best motivator.
  • Roll a small towel under the chest to give a little lift if they tire quickly.

Tempt them to move

  • Place a favourite toy just beyond reach so they have to shift weight and stretch towards it.
  • Get down on all fours yourself and crawl — babies are brilliant imitators.
  • Create a short "obstacle course" with cushions to climb over and tunnels to peek through.

Strengthen the crawl position

  • Gently support them on hands and knees and let them feel the rocking motion.
  • Encourage reaching with one hand while weight-bearing on the other — this builds the cross-body pattern.
  • Lots of barefoot floor play helps grip and push-off.

Keep it short, joyful and pressure-free. Frustration is fine in small doses — it's what motivates problem-solving — but always end on a happy note.

When to check in with someone

Crawling styles vary hugely — bottom-shuffling, commando-crawling and rolling are all normal routes to moving around. Do have a friendly developmental check if by around 9–10 months your baby isn't bearing any weight on their legs, seems very stiff or very floppy, strongly favours one side of the body, or has lost a skill they previously had. These aren't alarms — just sensible reasons to ask, so any support can start early.

What to watch

Have a developmental check if by around 9–10 months your baby isn't bearing weight on the legs, is very stiff or very floppy, strongly favours one side, or has lost a previously gained skill.

Try this at home

Get down on the floor and crawl yourself — babies are natural imitators, and your face is the most powerful toy in the room.

Frequently asked

At what age should my baby start crawling?

Many babies crawl between 7 and 10 months, but the normal window is wide. Some babies bottom-shuffle, commando-crawl or skip crawling altogether and go straight to standing and walking — all of these can be perfectly typical.

Is it a problem if my baby skips crawling?

Not on its own. Plenty of babies who never crawl in the classic way walk on time and develop well. What matters more is that your baby is moving, exploring and steadily gaining strength. If you're unsure, a quick developmental check offers reassurance.

How much tummy time does my baby need to learn to crawl?

Little and often works best — several short sessions through the day, building up as your baby grows stronger. Make it fun by lying face-to-face or using a mirror, and always supervise tummy time while your baby is awake.
