Grow Your Child's Communication at Home — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Every shared giggle, pointed finger and back-and-forth babble is your child learning the most human skill of all — and your living room is the best classroom there is.

In short

You build communication skills at home through everyday moments — talking, singing, reading and playing — by following your child's lead, pausing to let them respond, and treating every sound or gesture as a turn in a conversation. You don't need special equipment or training; you need warmth, repetition and a little patience. Below are simple, proven activities you can fold into any ordinary day.

Everyday activities that grow communication

Follow their lead and narrate
  • Watch what your child looks at or reaches for, then put words to it: "You found the ball! Big red ball."
  • Describe your own day out loud while cooking, bathing or dressing — this floods their day with rich language.

Build in the pause

  • After you ask or say something, wait — count slowly to five. That silence is the invitation for your child to take their turn with a sound, look, gesture or word.
  • Respond to any attempt — a glance, a point, a babble — as if it were a full sentence. This teaches that communication works.

Play with turns

  • Roll a ball back and forth, stack and knock down blocks, or play peek-a-boo. These "my turn, your turn" games are the foundation of conversation.
  • Use songs with actions (Incy Wincy Spider, clap-clap) and pause before the last word so they fill it in.

Read and share books daily

  • Point to pictures and name them; ask simple questions and answer them yourself if needed.
  • Let your child turn the pages and choose the book — choice-making is communication too.

Offer choices

  • Hold up two options — "banana or apple?" — so your child must signal a preference by reaching, looking or naming.

Do these little and often, in your home language. Children learn best in the language of love and daily life.

When to check in with a professional

Home activities support every child, but some need a little extra help. If your child isn't babbling by around 12 months, has no single words by 16 months, no two-word phrases by 24 months, or seems to lose words or social back-and-forth they once had, it's worth arranging a developmental check. A hearing check is always a sensible first step too. Reaching out early is a strength, not an alarm.

What to watch

Check in with a professional if there's no babbling by 12 months, no single words by 16 months, no two-word phrases by 24 months, or any loss of words or social back-and-forth your child once had.

Try this at home

After you say or ask anything, wait and count slowly to five — that pause is your child's invitation to take their turn with a look, sound, gesture or word.

Frequently asked

What age should I start working on communication skills at home?

From birth. Newborns communicate through cries, gazes and coos, and responding warmly to these is the first lesson in conversation. Talking, singing and reading are valuable at every age and stage.

Does using two languages at home confuse my child?

No. Children are well able to learn more than one language, and growing up bilingual does not cause delay. Speak the language you are most comfortable and loving in — rich, responsive talk matters far more than which language it is.

My child points and gestures but says few words. Is that communication?

Yes, absolutely. Pointing, showing, eye contact and gestures are vital forms of communication and a healthy foundation for words. Respond to every gesture as a full message to encourage more.

How much time each day should I spend on these activities?

You don't need set lessons. Weave short, frequent moments into daily routines — narrating during bath time, naming foods at meals, a song before sleep. Little and often works better than one long session.
