Communication Cards

Working on Communication Cards with Your Child at Home

Start with 2–4 highly motivating picture cards, model using them yourself as you say the word, respond instantly to every attempt, and weave cards into daily routines. Offering cards encourages communication and often more speech, not less. A therapist can tailor the system to your child.

Communication Cards at Home: A Gentle Parent's Guide — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Sometimes the bridge to your child's first clear request is a small picture card held in their hand.

In short

Communication Cards are picture or symbol cards your child uses to show what they want, feel or notice — a gentle, powerful way to build communication when speech is still emerging. At home you start small with a few highly motivating cards, model their use yourself, and honour every attempt your child makes to share. This does not slow speech; offering a reliable way to communicate often encourages more talking, not less.

How to work on Communication Cards at home

Start small and motivating
  • Begin with 2–4 cards for things your child truly loves — a favourite snack, a toy, "more", "finished".
  • Keep cards where your child can reach them: on the fridge, in a small ring binder, or velcroed to a board.

Model, model, model

  • Touch or hand over the card yourself as you say the word — "more" while giving more bubbles. Children learn by watching you use the system first.
  • Pause and wait. Give your child a few quiet seconds to reach for a card before you step in.

Honour every attempt

  • The moment your child touches or gives you a card, respond instantly with the real thing and the spoken word. Quick rewards build trust in the system.
  • Accept pointing, reaching or a glance as a start — shape it gently towards handing you the card.

Weave it into daily routines

  • Use cards at snack time, bath time, play and bedtime — the same words, every day.
  • Add new cards slowly as the first ones become easy, building towards two-card combinations like "want" + "biscuit".

When to seek guidance

If your child shows little interest after a few weeks, gets frustrated, or you are unsure which cards or system fits, a speech-language therapist can tailor the approach. Cards are one route into communication — a clinician can match them to your child's strengths and pair them with speech therapy.

What to watch

Watch for whether your child begins reaching for or handing over cards within a few weeks, and whether spoken attempts grow alongside. Persistent frustration, no interest, or confusion about which cards to use is a cue to ask a speech-language therapist for a tailored plan.

Try this at home

Keep one favourite-snack card within reach at the table and wait a few quiet seconds before helping — let your child reach for it first, then respond instantly with the snack and the spoken word.

Frequently asked

Will using Communication Cards stop my child from talking?

No — this is a common worry, but giving a child a reliable way to communicate usually encourages more talking, not less. Always say the word as you use the card so speech and picture grow together.

How many cards should I start with?

Begin with just 2–4 cards for things your child truly loves or asks for often, like a favourite snack, a toy, 'more' or 'finished'. Add new cards slowly as the first ones become easy.

What if my child ignores the cards?

Keep modelling them yourself for a few weeks and pair them with highly motivating items. If interest stays low or your child gets frustrated, a speech-language therapist can adjust the cards and approach to suit your child.
