Command Following

Helping Your Child Follow Commands at Home

Build command following at home with short, clear one-step instructions paired with gestures, plenty of warm praise, and playful games like Simon Says woven into daily routines. Grow toward two-step commands as your child succeeds, keep sessions tiny and frequent, and seek a friendly speech review if simple commands aren't followed by around 18-24 months.

Helping Your Child Follow Commands at Home
Build Command Following at Home - Simple, Playful Steps — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Every time your child does what you ask — "give me the ball", "come here" — they're showing you that language is becoming action. And this is something you can grow at home, every day.

In short

Command following grows fastest through short, playful, everyday moments — not formal lessons. Start with one-step commands paired with gestures and a clear, calm voice, reward the response warmly, and slowly build toward two-step commands as your child succeeds. Keep it fun, frequent and woven into daily routines like dressing, mealtimes and play.

Activities you can try at home

Start simple (one-step commands)
  • Use short, clear words: "Sit", "Come", "Give me the cup". Say it once, then wait.
  • Pair your words with a gesture or point at first, then slowly fade the gesture as your child gets it.
  • Celebrate every success — a clap, a cuddle, "You did it!". Warmth is the best reward.

Make it playful

  • Simon Says or "copy me" games — touch your nose, clap your hands, jump.
  • Treasure hunt — "Bring me the red block", "Put teddy on the chair".
  • Helper games during chores — "Give this to Amma", "Push the door".

Build up gradually

  • Once one-step commands are easy, try two steps: "Pick up the spoon and give it to me".
  • Add commands without gestures so your child relies on listening.
  • Use real routines: dressing ("arms up"), bath time ("wash your hands"), tidy-up time.

Set them up to win

  • Get down to eye level and reduce background noise — no TV competing for attention.
  • Give your child a few seconds to process before repeating. Many children just need more time.
  • Keep sessions tiny — 5 minutes, several times a day, beats one long drill.

When to seek a little extra support

If your child consistently does not respond to simple, familiar commands by around 18–24 months, or seems not to hear you, a hearing check and a friendly speech therapy review are sensible next steps. Persistent difficulty following routine instructions across home and other settings is worth a gentle developmental check — not a cause for alarm, but a reason to ask.

What to watch

Watch for whether your child responds more easily to familiar commands over the weeks, and whether they need fewer gestures over time. If they seem not to hear you, don't respond to their name, or can't follow simple familiar commands by around 18-24 months, arrange a hearing check and a friendly developmental review.

Try this at home

Pick three commands you use daily - 'come here', 'give me', 'sit down' - and turn each into a 5-minute game today. Say it once, wait, then celebrate big when your child responds.

Frequently asked

At what age should my child follow simple commands?

Many children begin following simple one-step commands with a gesture around 12 months, and without a gesture by 15-18 months. By around 24 months, lots of toddlers can follow simple two-step instructions. Every child has their own pace, so think in ranges, not exact dates - and if you're unsure, a friendly developmental check can reassure you.

Should I repeat a command if my child doesn't respond?

Give your child a few seconds first - many children simply need more time to process the words. If there's no response, repeat it once calmly, add a gesture or gentle physical guidance, and warmly celebrate when they do it. Avoid repeating the same command many times in a row, as this can become background noise.

My child follows some commands but not others - is that a concern?

Not on its own. Children often follow familiar, motivating commands ("come for snack") before less interesting ones. Try making commands part of fun or rewarding moments. If difficulty is widespread, across many everyday instructions and settings, or you suspect a hearing issue, it's worth a gentle review with a speech therapist.
