Adaptive skills are simply the everyday life skills your child uses to do things for themselves — and your home is the very best place to grow them.

Adaptive skills cover the practical, daily-living abilities your child needs to manage themselves and their world — dressing, eating, washing, tidying up, following routines and asking for help. You build them at home by turning ordinary routines into gentle learning moments, breaking each task into small steps, and celebrating every bit of independence. Little and often, woven into the day, works far better than a special practice session.

Easy ways to practise at home

Make daily routines the lesson
  • Let your child have a real job in each routine — holding the spoon, pulling up a sock, putting a cup in the sink. Doing beats watching.
  • Break a big task into small steps (e.g. handwashing: wet hands → soap → rub → rinse → dry) and teach one step at a time.
  • Use the same words and the same order each day. Predictable routines help skills stick.

Self-care and feeding

  • Offer clothes with easy fastenings and let them try first, helping only where they get stuck.
  • Let them self-feed even when it's messy — scooping, holding a cup, wiping a spill are all skills.
  • Encourage them to ask or gesture for what they need, rather than you anticipating everything.

Build helping and tidying

  • Give one simple chore matched to their level — putting toys in a basket, carrying their plate, watering a plant.
  • Use picture cards or a simple morning chart so they can see what comes next and feel in control.

Keep it warm and low-pressure

  • Praise the effort and the try, not just the perfect result.
  • Allow extra time so the moment doesn't become rushed or stressful.
  • Step back a little more each week as they grow more able — fade your help, don't remove it suddenly.

When to seek a little extra support

Most children learn these skills steadily with practice and patience. If your child seems to find everyday self-care much harder than peers of the same age, isn't making progress over several months, or daily routines are consistently very stressful, it's worth a friendly developmental check — early support makes a real difference and is never something to worry about asking for.
