Supporting Social Development in Your 5-Year-Old

Support a five-year-old's social development through everyday play, naming feelings, turn-taking, playdates and modelling kindness, while coaching problem-solving rather than rescuing. A check helps if a child consistently avoids others or struggles to join play. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care.

Supporting Social Development in Your 5-Year-Old
Supporting Your 5-Year-Old's Social Growth — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

At five, friendships begin to bloom — and the warmth you bring to everyday play is the richest soil for your child's social growth.

In short

You can support your five-year-old's social development through everyday play, conversation and gentle coaching — naming feelings, encouraging turn-taking, arranging playdates, and modelling kindness and problem-solving yourself. At this age children are learning to share, cooperate, follow simple group rules and read others' emotions, so the most powerful tool is consistent, warm practice woven into daily life. Most five-year-olds make wonderful strides when given playful, low-pressure chances to be with other children.

Ways to nurture social skills at home

  • Play together, then step back — board games, pretend play and building together teach turn-taking, sharing and negotiation. Let your child lead sometimes so they practise making decisions and handling small frustrations.
  • Name feelings out loud — "You look proud" or "She seems sad" builds the emotion vocabulary children need to understand friends. Reading stories and pausing to ask "How do you think he feels?" works beautifully.
  • Arrange short, simple playdates — one friend at a time, with a clear activity, helps a child practise cooperation without becoming overwhelmed. Praise sharing and kindness when you see it.
  • Coach problem-solving, don't rescue — when squabbles happen, calmly help them find words: "Tell her you'd like a turn next." This grows independence and conflict resolution.
  • Model what you teach — children copy how you greet people, take turns in conversation, apologise and stay calm. You are their first and best social example.
  • Keep routines predictable — knowing what comes next frees a child to focus on the people around them rather than the unknown.

The goal is not a perfectly behaved child, but a confident one who feels safe to try, make mistakes and try again.

When a gentle check helps

Most variation at five is completely normal. Consider a developmental check if your child consistently avoids other children, rarely makes eye contact or shares interests, finds it very hard to follow simple group rules or join play, shows little pretend or imaginative play, or seems persistently distressed in social settings. A check is reassuring, not alarming — it simply helps you understand your child's strengths and where a little support could help.

Try this at home

During play, pause and name feelings out loud — "You look proud!" or "He seems sad" — so your child builds the emotion words that friendships are made of.

Frequently asked

What social skills are normal for a 5-year-old?

Most five-year-olds can share and take turns (with reminders), play cooperatively, follow simple group rules, show empathy, enjoy pretend play with friends, and begin to manage small disappointments. There is a wide normal range, so some children take longer than others.

How can I help a shy five-year-old make friends?

Start with one friend at a time and a clear, fun activity, keep playdates short, and praise kindness and sharing when you see it. Model friendly greetings yourself and never force interaction — gentle, repeated low-pressure practice builds confidence over time.

When should I be concerned about my child's social development?

Consider a gentle developmental check if your child consistently avoids other children, rarely makes eye contact or shares interests, struggles to join play or follow simple group rules, shows little pretend play, or is persistently distressed socially. A check is reassuring and helps you understand how best to support them.
