How to Support Your Child's Early Words

Grow early words through warm, everyday back-and-forth talk: narrate routines, follow your child's lead, pause to invite a turn, expand their attempts, and favour real faces over screens. Little and often, through play, is exactly right.

Those first wobbly words — "mama", "more", "go" — are tiny milestones with enormous meaning, and you have more power to nurture them than anyone.

In short

The best way to grow early words is everyday, playful talk: name what your child sees and does, pause to let them respond, and treat every sound or gesture as a real attempt at conversation. Children learn language from warm back-and-forth with the people they love — not from screens or drills. Little and often, woven through play and routines, is exactly right.

Simple things that build words

  • Narrate the day. Talk through bathing, eating and dressing — "Up goes the spoon... mmm, banana!" Heard words become spoken words.
  • Follow their lead. Watch what your child looks at or reaches for, then name it. Interest fuels learning.
  • Pause and wait. After you speak, count silently to five. That gap invites your child to take their turn — with a sound, a point or a word.
  • Expand, don't correct. If they say "dog", reply "Yes! Big dog!" You are modelling the next step, not marking a mistake.
  • Sing and repeat. Rhymes, action songs and favourite books said the same way each time give words a predictable, joyful home.
  • Reduce screens, increase faces. Real conversation, eye contact and gesture do the heavy lifting at this age.

The science, briefly

Early words emerge from thousands of small, responsive exchanges — what researchers call "serve and return". Each time you respond to your toddler's babble or point, you strengthen the brain pathways for communication. Quality of interaction matters more than the number of toys or apps.

What to watch

If by 16 months your child has no single words, or by 24 months no two-word phrases, or you notice loss of words already learned, arrange a developmental check rather than waiting.

Try this at home

After you say something, count silently to five before speaking again — that pause gives your toddler space to take their turn with a sound, point or word.

Frequently asked

How many words should my toddler have?

Ranges are wide. Many children say a few words around 12 months and combine two words near 24 months, but every child is different. Focus on steady growth and back-and-forth communication rather than an exact count, and seek a check if you notice no words by 16 months or no phrases by 24 months.

Will using two languages at home confuse my child?

No. Growing up with more than one language does not cause delay. Keep speaking the languages your family loves — children sort them out naturally and benefit from the rich exposure.

Are educational apps good for early words?

Real conversation with you matters far more at this age. Screens can't replace the serve-and-return of talking, pointing and reading together. Keep screen time low and face-to-face time high.
