Communication

Supporting your child's communication development at home

You support your child's communication at home by talking with them through everyday moments, following their interests, pausing to let them respond, and treating every sound and gesture as a real attempt to connect — with reading, singing and face-to-face play woven through the day. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care.

Support Your Child's Communication at Home — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Every shared giggle, pointed finger and back-and-forth babble is your child learning that communication is worth it — and your home is where that learning begins.

In short

You support your child's communication at home by talking with them, not just to them — narrating daily life, following their interests, pausing to let them respond, and treating every sound, gesture and glance as a real attempt to connect. Communication grows through warm, responsive back-and-forth far more than through screens or drills. Small, playful moments woven through your ordinary day are the most powerful tool you have.

Simple things that build communication

  • Narrate your day — describe what you and your child are doing in short, clear phrases ("big splash!", "shoes on"). This gives words a meaning your child can see and feel.
  • Follow their lead — talk about whatever your child is looking at or reaching for. Words land best when they match a child's own interest in that moment.
  • Pause and wait — after you speak or ask, count silently to five. That gap gives your child the time and space to take their turn, with a sound, a gesture or a word.
  • Respond to every attempt — when your child babbles, points or grunts towards something, treat it as meaningful. Name it and respond ("You want the ball? Here's the ball!"). This teaches that communication works.
  • Read and sing together daily — shared books and rhymes pack in rich language, rhythm and turn-taking in a way children love to repeat.
  • Get face to face — come down to your child's eye level so they can see your mouth, expressions and eyes. Connection comes first; words follow.
  • Limit background screens and noise — real conversation, not passive sound, is what builds language.

Most of all, keep it joyful. Children communicate most when they feel safe, unhurried and delighted to be with you.

When a gentle check helps

Every child has their own pace, but it's worth a developmental check if by around their first birthday your child rarely babbles, points or gestures; if by around two they use very few words or aren't joining words; if they seem not to respond to their name or familiar sounds; or if your child has lost words or skills they once had. Asking early is never an overreaction — it simply opens the door to support if it's needed.

What to watch

Watch for little babbling, pointing or gesturing by around the first birthday, very few words or no word combinations by around two, not responding to name or familiar sounds, or any loss of words or skills once gained — these are worth a gentle developmental check.

Try this at home

Narrate your day in short, clear phrases and then pause — count silently to five after you speak so your child has the space to take their turn with a sound, gesture or word.

Frequently asked

Will too much talking overwhelm my child?

No — what helps is talking *with* your child, not at them. Use short, clear phrases that match what your child is interested in right now, then pause to give them a turn. It's the back-and-forth, not the volume of words, that builds communication.

Do screens help my child learn to talk?

Real, responsive conversation with you builds language far better than screens. Passive screen time and background noise can actually crowd out the live interaction children need. Reading, singing and playing face to face are much more powerful.

My child points and gestures but doesn't say words yet — is that communication?

Yes, very much so. Pointing, gesturing, eye contact and babbling are all real communication and important steps towards words. Respond to every attempt by naming it and replying, and you'll be building the foundation that speech grows from.
