You support your child's cognitive development at home by weaving rich talk, play and everyday routines into ordinary moments — narrating what you do, asking open questions, reading together daily, and giving your child time to explore, make choices and solve small problems themselves. Cognition (the WHO calls these mental functions — attention, memory, thinking and problem-solving) grows fastest when a child feels safe, curious and gently challenged. You do not need expensive toys; your attention, language and patience are the most powerful tools there are.

What helps at home

  • Talk, narrate and name — describe what you are doing ("I'm cutting the soft, yellow banana"), label objects and feelings, and add new words. Rich language is the foundation of thinking.
  • Read together every day — even a few minutes builds vocabulary, memory and attention. Pause to ask "What do you think happens next?"
  • Ask open questions — "Why?", "How?", "What if?" — and give your child time to answer. Resist jumping in with the answer.
  • Play that stretches thinking — sorting, matching, simple puzzles, building blocks, pretend play and turn-taking games all build memory, sequencing and problem-solving.
  • Let them solve small problems — how to reach a toy, how to stack the cup. A little struggle (with you nearby) grows persistence and reasoning.
  • Predictable routines — daily rhythms help a child anticipate, sequence and remember, which strengthens attention and planning.
  • Protect sleep, movement and limit screens — a rested, active child learns best; screen time for young children should be limited and, where possible, shared with you.

No. Your attention, language and everyday objects are the most powerful tools. Talking, reading, sorting household items, pretend play and giving your child time to solve small problems build thinking, memory and attention far more than any expensive toy.
