How to nurture your child's sensory development

Children's sensory development is nurtured through rich, joyful everyday experiences across touch, movement, sound, sight, taste and smell, offered at the child's own comfortable pace through play and routine. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care.

How to nurture your child's sensory development
Nurturing Your Child's Sensory Development — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Every cuddle, splash and crunchy bite is your child learning to make sense of their world — and you are their first, best guide.

In short

You nurture your child's sensory development by offering rich, everyday experiences across all their senses — touch, movement, sound, sight, taste and smell — at a pace that feels comfortable and joyful for them. The senses are how a child gathers information about their body and the world, and they grow stronger through play, routine and gentle repetition. You don't need special equipment — your home, garden and daily routines are a wonderful sensory playground.

Simple ways to nurture the senses

  • Touch (tactile) — let your child explore safe textures: warm water, sand, dough, soft fabric, finger-paint. Messy play is brilliant sensory learning.
  • Movement & balance (vestibular & proprioception) — swinging, rocking, climbing, rolling and gentle roughhousing help your child sense where their body is and feel calm and organised.
  • Sound & sight — sing, name everyday sounds, read together, play peekaboo and watch bubbles float. Keep some moments quiet so your child can also enjoy calm.
  • Taste & smell — offer a variety of flavours and let your child smell foods, flowers and spices during everyday life.
  • Follow your child's lead — if something feels too much (covering ears, pulling away), pause and try again gently another time. Comfort and trust matter more than pushing through.

Most children seek out the sensory input they need through play — your job is simply to offer safe, varied chances and respond warmly.

When to seek a check

It's worth a developmental check if your child is very distressed by everyday sounds, textures or clothing tags, strongly avoids messy play, seeks intense movement constantly, or seems unusually unaware of touch, sound or pain. These patterns are supportable — early, playful help works well.

What to watch

Watch for strong distress with everyday sounds, textures or clothing tags, avoidance of messy play, constant seeking of intense movement, or unusual unawareness of touch, sound or pain — all supportable with early, playful help.

Try this at home

Turn one daily routine into sensory play — let your child splash in bathwater, squish dough before dinner, or feel different fabrics — following their lead and pausing if anything feels too much.

Frequently asked

Do I need special toys or equipment for sensory play?

Not at all. Your home and garden offer wonderful sensory experiences — water, sand, dough, fabrics, singing, swinging and everyday foods. Variety and warm responsiveness matter far more than special equipment.

My child hates messy play. Is that a problem?

Many children dislike certain textures, and that's common. Offer gentle, low-pressure chances without forcing, and try again another day. If the distress is strong or limits daily life, a developmental check with an occupational therapist can help.

How does movement help sensory development?

Swinging, rocking, climbing and rolling develop balance and body-awareness, which help children feel calm, organised and confident in their movements. Active, playful movement is an important part of sensory growth.
