Helping Your Toddler Learn Inhibition at Home

Build your toddler's inhibition through short, playful stop-and-go games, tiny everyday waits, turn-taking play, and your own calm modelling. Impulsivity is normal at this age — keep practice brief, warm and celebratory rather than corrective.

Helping Your Toddler Learn to Pause at Home — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Every time your toddler pauses before grabbing, waits a heartbeat before reacting, or stops when you say "stop" — that's inhibition growing, and you can nurture it at home.

In short

Inhibition — the ability to pause, wait and resist an impulse — grows slowly between 12 and 36 months, and it grows through play, not lectures. The best way to help your toddler is short, fun "stop-and-go" games, calm waiting moments built into the day, and your own steady modelling. Keep it playful, keep it brief, and celebrate every small pause.

Simple ways to build inhibition at home

  • Stop-and-go games — "Red light, green light", freeze-dance to music, or "Simon says". Stopping on cue is inhibition in action.
  • Tiny waits, often — "Let's count to three before we open it." Short, winnable waits teach the brain that pausing is safe and rewarded.
  • Turn-taking play — rolling a ball back and forth, or "my turn, your turn" with a toy, builds the wait-your-turn muscle.
  • Name the feeling, then the pause — "You really want the biscuit — let's take a big breath and wait." You are lending your child your calm.
  • Model it yourself — narrate your own pauses: "I want to answer the phone, but first I'll finish talking with you."

Keep sessions to a few minutes. A tired or hungry toddler cannot inhibit well — that's normal, not a setback.

The science, simply

Inhibition is a core executive-function skill, part of how the developing brain manages behaviour ([ICF d1](https://icd.who.int)). In toddlerhood it is just emerging, so impulsivity is expected, not a worry. Predictable routines, warm responsive parenting and playful practice are exactly what research-backed nurturing care recommends to strengthen it.

What to watch

Some impulsivity is completely normal for toddlers. Watch over time for whether your child can ever pause or wait in calm, rested moments — if waiting feels impossible across many settings even as they near 3, mention it at a developmental check.

Try this at home

Play one round of freeze-dance or 'red light, green light' before snack time — 3 minutes of joyful stopping does more than any reminder to 'be patient'.

Frequently asked

Is it normal for my toddler to be very impulsive?

Yes. Between 12 and 36 months, inhibition is only just emerging, so grabbing, interrupting and acting on impulse are completely expected. Gentle, playful practice helps it grow over time.

What games help build inhibition?

Stop-and-go games like freeze-dance, 'red light, green light' and 'Simon says', plus turn-taking play and short counted waits, all give your toddler safe, fun practice at pausing.

When should I raise inhibition concerns with a professional?

If your child can almost never pause or wait — even in calm, rested moments — across home and other settings as they approach age 3, mention it at a routine developmental check so a clinician can take a closer look.
