Helping Your Toddler Build Working Memory at Home

Build a toddler's working memory through short, joyful, repeated routines — hiding games, simple one- then two-step instructions, action songs and predictable daily sequences. Keep it brief and led by your child; repetition and warmth matter more than drills at this age.

Building Your Toddler's Working Memory at Home — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Working memory is the tiny mental shelf where your toddler holds an idea just long enough to act on it — and it grows beautifully through everyday play.

In short

For a child between 1 and 3, you build working memory not with drills but with playful, repeatable routines — short songs, hiding games, simple one-then-two step instructions, and lots of warm repetition. Keep it brief, joyful and predictable; your toddler's "mental shelf" is small at this age and grows with practice, not pressure. Choose a few of the ideas below and weave them into the day you already have.

Simple ways to build working memory at home

  • Peek-a-boo and hide-and-seek with objects — hide a favourite toy under a cloth and ask "where's teddy?" Holding the toy in mind while it's out of sight is working memory in action.
  • Two-part instructions — start with one step ("get your shoes"), then build to two ("get your shoes and bring them to me"). Celebrate every success.
  • Sing repeated songs with actions — nursery rhymes with gestures ask your child to remember what comes next.
  • Name three, find three — at tidy-up time, "let's find the ball, the cup and the spoon."
  • Picture-card recall — show two picture cards, turn them over, and ask "which one was the dog?"
  • Predictable routines — the same bedtime sequence helps your child hold a sequence of steps in mind.

Keep sessions to a few minutes, follow your child's lead, and stop while it's still fun.

The science

Working memory is part of the brain's early executive function — the toolkit for holding and using information. In toddlers it is just emerging, so short, repeated, playful practice within familiar routines is far more effective than formal exercises. Warm interaction and repetition strengthen the neural pathways that hold information briefly in mind.

What to watch

If your toddler struggles to follow even a single simple instruction, rarely searches for hidden objects, or seems unable to recall familiar routines by around 2–3 years, mention it at your next developmental check.

Try this at home

Turn tidy-up into a memory game: name two or three toys to find — "the ball, the cup and the spoon" — and cheer each one your child remembers.

Frequently asked

At what age does working memory start developing?

Working memory begins emerging in the toddler years and grows gradually through childhood. Between 1 and 3, it's very early — so short, playful, repeated activities woven into daily routines suit this stage far better than formal exercises.

How long should memory games last for a toddler?

Just a few minutes. Toddlers have short attention spans, so brief, frequent moments of play work best. Follow your child's interest and stop while it's still enjoyable.

Should I worry if my toddler forgets instructions?

Not usually — holding instructions in mind is a skill that's still developing at this age. Start with one-step requests and build slowly. If you have ongoing concerns, mention them at a developmental check.
