Hitting Others

Supporting a 3-Year-Old Who Hits in Class

Hitting at three is usually a normal sign that feelings have outpaced language and self-control. A teacher supports best by staying calm, keeping everyone safe, naming the feeling, setting a firm gentle limit, and teaching a do-instead while building the child's words and praising positive moments. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care.

Helping a 3-Year-Old Who Hits in Class — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

When a small child hits, they are not being 'naughty' — they are telling you, with their hands, that a feeling has grown too big for their words.

In short

At three, hitting is most often a normal sign that a child's feelings have outpaced their language and self-control — not a sign of a 'bad' child. A teacher helps most by staying calm, keeping everyone safe, naming the feeling, and patiently teaching the words and actions to use instead. Consistent, warm responses repeated many times — not punishment — are what change the behaviour over weeks.

How a teacher can support

  • Keep it calm and safe first. Step in quietly, gently separate the children, and tend to the child who was hurt. A composed adult helps an overwhelmed child settle far faster than a raised voice.
  • Name the feeling, set the limit. Try: "You were angry he took the toy. I won't let you hit. Hitting hurts." This tells the child you understand and where the line is — both at once.
  • Teach the replacement. Children this age cannot simply 'stop' a behaviour; they need a do-instead. Coach simple alternatives: "hands down", "say STOP", come find me, or stamp big feelings out with feet. Practise these in calm moments, not only in the heat of it.
  • Spot the triggers. Note when hitting happens — sharing, transitions, hunger, tiredness, crowding, or when a child has few words. Adjusting the environment (more of a popular toy, smaller groups, warnings before transitions) prevents many incidents.
  • Catch and praise the good. Notice out loud when the child shares, waits or uses words: "You asked for a turn — that was so kind." Attention to positive moments builds them.
  • Build the words. Much hitting at three is a language gap. Picture cards, choice-giving and modelling short phrases give the child a faster, safer way to be heard.
  • Partner with parents, consistently. The same calm script at home and school helps the child learn quickly. Share what works, without blame.

When to look a little closer

Most three-year-olds hit sometimes and grow out of it with steady guidance. Consider a developmental check if the hitting is very frequent or intense, doesn't ease over a few months of consistent support, comes with very limited speech, big struggles to settle or join in, or frequent meltdowns — so any underlying communication, sensory or developmental need can be understood and supported early.

The Pinnacle way

A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under qualified clinician care — never from a classroom checklist or online form. If a child's hitting is paired with limited language or difficulty settling, an unhurried developmental profile can reveal what's really driving it, and behaviour and emotional-regulation support can give the child calmer tools. Where words are the gap, speech and language therapy often helps the most.

What to watch

Watch for hitting that is very frequent or intense, doesn't ease over a few months of consistent support, comes with very limited speech, frequent meltdowns, or big difficulty settling and joining in — these warrant a gentle developmental check.

Try this at home

In calm moments, practise a simple 'do-instead' with the child — 'hands down, say STOP, come find me' — so the words are ready before the next big feeling arrives.

Frequently asked

Is it normal for a 3-year-old to hit other children?

Yes — hitting is common at three, when feelings often grow bigger than a child's words or self-control. With calm, consistent guidance, most children steadily learn safer ways to express themselves.

Should a teacher punish a child for hitting?

No. Punishment rarely teaches what to do instead and can increase distress. Staying calm, setting a gentle firm limit ('I won't let you hit'), and coaching a replacement action works far better over time.

When should hitting prompt a developmental check?

Consider a check if hitting is very frequent or intense, doesn't ease over a few months of consistent support, or comes with very limited speech, frequent meltdowns, or trouble settling and joining in.

How does building speech reduce hitting?

Much hitting at three is a language gap — a child hits because they cannot yet say what they need. Giving them words, picture cards and choices offers a faster, safer way to be heard.
