Not Pointing To Show Things

Supporting a 1-Year-Old Who Isn't Yet Pointing to Show Things

A teacher can support a one-year-old who isn't yet pointing by modelling the gesture, following the child's gaze, creating reasons to reach and show, and responding warmly to every communication attempt — all through joyful, pressure-free play. Pointing usually emerges by 12–16 months; suggest a developmental check if it hasn't appeared by 18 months. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care.

Helping a 1-Year-Old Who Isn't Pointing Yet — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

A one-year-old who doesn't yet point to share a discovery isn't 'behind' — they're a young communicator you can gently invite into connection, one shared moment at a time.

In short

At around 12 months, pointing to show things — lifting a finger to share a discovery and then looking back at you — is one of the loveliest early signs of social communication, but many one-year-olds are still warming up to it. As a teacher, you can support this child beautifully by narrating, gesturing and sharing attention throughout the day, without pressure. Pointing usually emerges between about 12 and 16 months; keep offering rich, playful chances to share, and gently flag it for a developmental check if it hasn't appeared by 18 months.

Ways a teacher can support pointing

  • Model the gesture, all day long — point to interesting things yourself ("Look! A bird!") and pause, looking between the child and the object. Children learn to point by watching adults do it with warmth and delight.
  • Follow the child's gaze — when they look at something, name it and point to it. This builds joint attention, the shared-focus skill that pointing grows from.
  • Create reach-and-show moments — place a favourite toy slightly out of reach or in a clear box, so the child has a real reason to gesture, reach or look to you for help.
  • Respond to every attempt — a reach, a glance, a sound or a grab is the beginning of communication. Reward it instantly with the named object and your happy attention.
  • Use lots of gesture and song — waving, clapping, "so big", and action rhymes all build the gesture vocabulary that points belong to.
  • Keep it joyful, never drilled — at one year, connection and play matter far more than performance. Share, don't test.

Most importantly, share what you notice warmly with the child's family — teachers often spot these patterns first, and a calm, caring word opens the door to early support.

When to suggest a check

No pointing at exactly 12 months is usually fine. Suggest the family arrange a general developmental check if, by around 16–18 months, the child still does not point to show or share things, rarely makes eye contact during play, doesn't respond to their name, or shows little back-and-forth gesturing, babbling or shared enjoyment. Early support, when it's needed, is gentle and highly effective.

What to watch

Watch whether pointing to share or show emerges by around 16–18 months, alongside eye contact during play, responding to name, babbling and back-and-forth gestures; persistent absence of these warrants a general developmental check.
