Assessing and tracking a child's imagination

A clinician tracks imaginative play (ICF d7) through repeated structured observation of symbolic, pretend and socio-dramatic play, paired with caregiver history. There is no single test — you chart progression from functional to narrative play against the child's own baseline, and only a Pinnacle clinician confirms what it means.

Assessing and tracking a child's imagination — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Imagination is where a child rehearses the world — and tracking its growth means watching play become richer, not waiting for a single test score.

In short

A clinician assesses imaginative play (ICF d7, learning and applying knowledge) through structured observation of pretend, symbolic and creative play across repeated sessions, paired with a caregiver developmental history. There is no single instrument — you build a longitudinal picture, charting how play moves from functional to symbolic to socio-dramatic, and you anchor each review against the child's own baseline rather than a norm alone.

How to assess and track

Imagination is read through behaviour in play, so sample it in naturalistic and semi-structured contexts:
  • Symbolic substitution — does the child use one object to represent another (a block as a phone)?
  • Object-, agent- and attribute-pretence — feeding a doll, voicing a character, assigning imaginary properties.
  • Sequencing and narrative — single pretend acts maturing into linked play schemes and stories.
  • Socio-dramatic and role play — negotiating roles, shared themes and reciprocal pretence with peers.
  • Flexibility and novelty — generating new ideas versus rigid, repetitive scripts.

Track with serial, dated observations using a consistent play-sampling protocol; capture video where consented, code play level each review, and triangulate with caregiver report. Differentiate look-alikes — language delay, restricted interests or anxiety can suppress pretence — before attributing a pattern.

When to escalate

Flag for fuller developmental review where symbolic play is absent by ~24–30 months, where pretence is markedly rigid or stereotyped, or where it regresses. Frame as a developmental check, not a label.

The Pinnacle way

A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care; the AbilityScore® is a clinician-administered structured assessment that measures the child against their own baseline. Backed by 2.5 billion+ data points and 25 million+ therapy sessions across 70+ centres, clinicians pair structured play assessment with play therapy and targeted goals. What to watch

Flag for review if symbolic pretend play is absent by 24–30 months, if pretence is markedly rigid, repetitive or stereotyped, or if previously emerging imaginative play regresses.

Try this at home

Sample play in more than one setting — solo, with a familiar adult, and with a peer. The same child's imaginative level can shift with comfort, language demand and social pressure, so a single session can mislead.

Frequently asked

Is there a single test for a child's imagination?

No. Imaginative play (ICF d7) is best assessed through repeated structured and naturalistic play observation coded against the child's own baseline, supported by caregiver report — not a one-off instrument.

What play levels should I track over time?

Chart progression from functional play to symbolic substitution, then to sequenced pretence, narrative play and reciprocal socio-dramatic role play with peers.

When should reduced pretend play prompt a wider review?

When symbolic play is absent by around 24–30 months, is markedly rigid or stereotyped, or regresses. Frame this as a developmental check rather than a label.
