telling your child

How and when to tell your child about their diagnosis

There is no single perfect age to tell a child about their diagnosis — there is a right way. Share the truth early in small, honest, hopeful pieces matched to your child's understanding, beginning with strengths and differences before using the clinical name (often around 5–7 years), so your child grows up knowing who they are rather than discovering it. Diagnosis itself is formed only at a Pinnacle centre under clinician care.

Telling your child about their diagnosis — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

One of the bravest questions a parent asks is not "what is my child's diagnosis?" but "how do I help my child understand it?"

In short

There is no single right age — there is a right way. Tell your child early, in small, honest, hopeful pieces matched to what they can understand, rather than waiting for one big conversation. For most children, gentle truthful language can begin from around 5–7 years, building gradually through the school years into a fuller understanding by adolescence. The goal is for your child to grow up knowing who they are, never discovering it — so the diagnosis feels like a piece of self-knowledge, not a shock.

How and when to start

Start with strengths and differences, not labels. Long before a clinical word is used, you can name how your child experiences the world — "your ears notice loud sounds more than other people's", "your body likes to move a lot", "you learn reading in a different way". This builds a calm, matter-of-fact foundation.

Follow your child's lead. Questions like "why do I see a therapist?" or "why is this harder for me?" are open doors. Answer the question they actually asked, simply and truthfully, then stop and let them come back for more.

Match the words to the age:

  • Younger children (5–8) — concrete, kind language about how their brain or body works differently, paired with what helps.
  • Middle childhood (9–12) — you can introduce the actual name of the diagnosis, explain it is something they were born with, and that many people share it.
  • Teenagers — a fuller conversation about identity, rights, what it means for the future, and increasingly letting them lead their own story.

Hold three messages steady: this is not your fault, this is not a punishment, and this does not limit who you can become. Keep the door open — this is a conversation that returns many times, never a one-off announcement.

The Pinnacle way

A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under qualified clinician care — never from an app, a form or a single conversation at home. Our clinicians and family-support team can help you find the right words for your child's age and personality, and rehearse the conversation before you have it. What to watch

Notice when your child starts asking questions like "why do I go to therapy?" or "why is this harder for me?" — these are open doors. Watch for signs they are comparing themselves to peers, or overhearing adult conversations, which means it is time to share more in age-appropriate language.

Try this at home

Keep it small and ongoing. Instead of planning one big talk, weave honest, kind sentences into everyday moments — and always end with "and here's what helps you."

Frequently asked

What age should I tell my child about their diagnosis?

There is no single right age. Most children can begin to understand gentle, truthful language about how they learn or experience the world from around 5–7 years, with the actual diagnosis name often introduced in middle childhood (9–12) and a fuller understanding built through the teenage years. It is best done as many small conversations over time, not one big announcement.

Should I use the clinical name of the diagnosis?

Eventually, yes — but start with strengths and differences first. For younger children, describe how their brain or body works in their world. As they grow and ask more questions, you can introduce the actual name, explaining it is part of who they are and that many people share it.

What if my child reacts with sadness or anger?

That is a normal and healthy response, not a sign you did it wrong. Stay calm, validate the feeling, and keep the door open for more talks. Three messages help: it is not your fault, it is not a punishment, and it does not limit who you can become. A Pinnacle family counsellor can support you through these reactions.

Can Pinnacle help me prepare this conversation?

Yes. Our clinicians and family-support team can help you find words suited to your child's age and personality and even rehearse the conversation with you beforehand. Any diagnosis itself is established only at a Pinnacle centre under qualified clinician care.
