Social Responsiveness Scale, 2nd Ed

At What Age Is the SRS-2 Used for a Child?

The SRS-2 (Social Responsiveness Scale, 2nd Edition) is a clinician-used questionnaire that spans a wide age range — from about 2.5 years through to adulthood — using different forms for each stage. A preschool form covers roughly 2.5–4.5 years, a school-age form about 4–18 years, and adult forms 19 years and older. It measures everyday social communication and is always interpreted alongside clinical assessment, never as a standalone diagnosis.

The SRS-2 is built to grow with a child — from the toddler years right through to adulthood — with a different form for each stage.

In short

The Social Responsiveness Scale, 2nd Edition (SRS-2) is a clinician-used questionnaire that can be applied across a wide age range — from around 2.5 years (30 months) through to adulthood. It is not a single form for one age, but a family of forms matched to a person's stage of life, completed by a parent, teacher or someone who knows the child well. It looks at everyday social communication, social awareness and related behaviours rather than offering any standalone diagnosis.

How the age range works

The SRS-2 uses different versions so the questions stay relevant to the child's world:
  • Preschool form — for younger children, from about 2.5 to 4.5 years, completed by a parent or carer.
  • School-age form — for children roughly 4 to 18 years, completed by a parent and/or teacher who sees the child regularly.
  • Adult forms — for those 19 years and older, with versions completed either by someone who knows the person or as a self-report.

Because it spans toddlerhood to adulthood, the SRS-2 is useful for tracking how a person's social communication looks over time. It is a measure — a structured way of gathering observations — and it is always read alongside direct clinical assessment, developmental history and other tools. On its own it does not confirm or rule out any condition.

When it helps

A clinician may use the SRS-2 when there are questions about a child's social communication and interaction, as one part of a broader developmental review. The form gives a consistent picture from the people who see the child most, which the clinical team then weaves together with their own observations. Choosing the right form for the child's exact age matters, so this is best done within a guided assessment rather than self-administered at home.

The Pinnacle way

This is general information, not a diagnosis — a clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under qualified clinician care, never from an app or a form alone. Our clinicians select and interpret tools such as the SRS-2 as part of a complete picture of your child's strengths, and may draw on speech therapy and other supports where helpful.

What to watch

Persistent differences in a child's social communication, awareness and interaction compared with peers — and choosing the SRS-2 form that matches your child's exact age, which is best guided by a clinician.

Try this at home

If you are gathering observations for a review, jot down everyday examples of how your child plays, shares, makes eye contact and responds to others — these real-life notes help clinicians interpret any questionnaire more accurately.

Frequently asked

What is the youngest age the SRS-2 can be used?

The SRS-2 preschool form can be used from about 2.5 years (30 months). It is completed by a parent or carer who knows the child well, and is always interpreted by a clinician alongside other assessment.

Can the SRS-2 be used for teenagers and adults?

Yes. A school-age form covers roughly 4 to 18 years, and separate adult forms are available from 19 years onward, including a self-report version. This wide range lets the tool follow a person's social communication over time.

Does the SRS-2 diagnose autism?

No. The SRS-2 is a structured measure of social communication, not a diagnosis. A clinician reads it alongside direct observation, developmental history and other tools. Any diagnosis is formed only at a centre under qualified clinician care.

Who completes the SRS-2 form?

Depending on the age and version, it is completed by a parent or carer, a teacher who sees the child regularly, or — for adults — by someone who knows the person or as a self-report.
