Helping Your Child Build Word Knowledge at Home

Build a child's word knowledge by naming the world inside everyday routines — narrate dressing and cooking, add one word to whatever they say, offer choices, pause to let them respond, and read together. Responsive back-and-forth talk teaches vocabulary better than drills.

Build Word Knowledge in Everyday Routines — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

The best vocabulary lessons rarely look like lessons — they hide inside the bath, the kitchen and the walk to the gate.

In short

You help a child build word knowledge by naming the world around them, again and again, inside the routines you already do. Talk about what you are both seeing, doing and feeling; pause to let your child respond; and add one small word to whatever they say. No flashcards or screens needed — your everyday narration is the richest teaching there is.

Gentle ways to practise during the day

  • Narrate routines. During dressing, bathing or cooking, name objects, actions and qualities: "warm water", "squeezy sponge", "we pour the rice". Repetition across days is how words stick.
  • Add one word. When your child says "ball", you reply "big ball" or "red ball". This gentle expansion stretches vocabulary without correcting them.
  • Offer choices. "Apple or banana?" gives the word and a reason to use it.
  • Pause and wait. Count slowly to five after you speak. That silence invites your child to fill the gap with a word or sound.
  • Read and re-read. Point to pictures, link them to real life — "that's a dog, like Sheru next door".
  • Follow their lead. Talk about whatever your child is looking at; words tied to their own interest are remembered best.

The science

Word knowledge (ICF d3, Communication) grows through rich, responsive back-and-forth talk far more than through drilling. When you label what your child is already attending to and give them time to respond, you build both understanding and use of word knowledge in a way that feels like play, not work.

The Pinnacle way

Across 70+ centres, our speech therapy teams coach families to weave language into ordinary moments. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care — this guidance is everyday home support, not a diagnosis.

Trusted sources

Guided by WHO ICF communication domains, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association on early language, and CDC "Learn the Signs. Act Early." milestone guidance on talking and understanding.

What to watch

Watch for whether your child is gaining new words over weeks, understanding simple instructions, and using words to ask for things. If words plateau or are lost, or there is no single word by 16 months, arrange a developmental check.

Try this at home

Pick one daily routine — bathtime works well — and name three things every time: "warm water", "big bubbles", "all done". Same words, same moment, every day builds memory.

Frequently asked

How much talking is enough during the day?

There is no fixed number — what matters is quality and responsiveness. Narrating a few routines like dressing, meals and a walk, and pausing to let your child respond, gives plenty of rich language across a day.

Should I correct my child when they say a word wrong?

No need to correct directly. Instead, gently repeat the word the right way in your reply — if they say "wa-wa", you say "yes, water!". This models the correct form without discouraging them.

Do flashcards or apps help build vocabulary?

Live, back-and-forth talk tied to real experiences builds word knowledge far better than flashcards or screens. Your everyday narration and shared reading are the most effective tools you have.
