Helping Your Child Practise Social Initiative at Home

Build social initiative by adding small invitations and a deliberate pause into everyday routines — meals, dressing, play — so your child reaches, points, looks or speaks first, then responding warmly to every attempt. Follow their lead and keep it playful.

Building Social Initiative in Everyday Routines — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Social initiative isn't taught at a desk — it grows in the warm, ordinary back-and-forth of your day together.

In short

You can gently build your child's social initiative — the urge to start an interaction — by weaving tiny invitations into everyday routines and then pausing to let your child take the lead. The secret ingredient is the wait: a friendly look, a held-out toy, and a few seconds of expectant silence give your child the space to reach, point, look or speak first. Follow their lead, celebrate every attempt, and keep it playful.

How to practise in everyday routines

Build the pause into things you already do.
  • Mealtimes: offer a little, then wait with a smile so your child gestures or asks for more rather than you topping up automatically.
  • Dressing & bath: sing a familiar song, then stop before the last word — let them fill the gap with a sound, sign or look.
  • Play: start a fun, repeatable game (peek-a-boo, roll-the-ball) and pause mid-game so your child signals "again".
  • Out and about: narrate, then wait — give them room to point at the dog or hand you the item they want.

Make initiating worth it. Respond warmly and instantly to any attempt — a glance, a reach, a word. Get face-to-face at their level so initiating is easy. Keep turns short and joyful, and follow whatever your child shows interest in.

The science

This everyday approach reflects the ICF activity-and-participation domain (d7, interpersonal interactions). Responsive, contingent interaction — noticing and rewarding a child's bids — is a well-evidenced foundation for communication and social growth.

What to watch

Watch for whether your child starts interactions on their own — a glance, point, gesture or word — not just responds. If by toddler age they rarely initiate across settings, mention it at a developmental check.

Try this at home

Use the 'expectant pause': offer something fun, then wait silently with a warm, eager look for a few seconds so your child takes the first turn.

Frequently asked

What is social initiative in simple terms?

It's your child's own urge to start an interaction — looking at you, pointing, reaching, smiling or speaking to begin a moment of connection, rather than only responding when you start.

How long should I pause to let my child initiate?

Around 3 to 5 seconds, with a warm, expectant look. That short silence gives your child the space to reach, point, look or speak first. Respond instantly to any attempt.

My child rarely starts interactions — should I worry?

Many children build initiation gradually. If your child seldom initiates across different settings as they grow, it's worth a gentle, non-diagnostic developmental check rather than waiting alone.
