YOUR QUESTION. A CLEARER NEXT STEP.
Support for Learning Difficulties at School
Schools can support learning difficulties through in-class adjustments, small-group or one-to-one teaching, individualised education plans, exam accommodations, and links to therapy. Under the RPwD Act 2016, recognised specific learning disabilities carry statutory accommodations. Start with the class teacher and a developmental check to map your child's profile.
In this answer 5 sections
When a child finds learning harder than their classmates, the right support at school can turn daily struggle into steady, visible progress.
In short
Schools can offer a layered net of support for learning difficulties — from in-class adjustments and small-group teaching to formal individualised plans, accommodations in exams, and links to therapists. Under India's Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016, children with recognised specific learning disabilities are entitled to reasonable accommodations. The first step is an open conversation with your child's class teacher and a developmental check to understand your child's profile of strengths and needs.
What support schools can provide
In the classroom (universal & targeted)
- Seating near the teacher, extra time to process instructions, and instructions broken into small steps
- Multi-sensory teaching — seeing, hearing and doing together — which helps reading, spelling and maths stick
- Small-group or one-to-one remedial teaching for reading, writing or numeracy
- Use of assistive tools: audiobooks, text-to-speech, calculators, or a laptop for writing
Formal plans & accommodations
- An Individualised Education Plan (IEP) setting specific, reviewable goals
- Exam accommodations — extra time, a scribe or reader, separate room, or alternative question formats
- For recognised specific learning disabilities, statutory accommodations under the RPwD Act 2016 and CBSE/state board provisions
Beyond the school gate
- Referral to speech therapy, occupational therapy or special education for skills that need focused work
- A home–school plan so the same strategies are used consistently in both places
How to get it started
Most schools respond best to a calm, specific conversation. Note what you see — slow reading, letter reversals, avoiding writing, struggle with sums, or frustration around homework — and ask the school what graded support and assessment they can offer. A structured developmental profile gives the school clear, objective information to build an IEP around, rather than guesswork.
The Pinnacle way
At Pinnacle Blooms Network, we build an objective picture of your child's learning profile through the clinician-administered AbilityScore® — a structured assessment that maps strengths and needs across domains and tracks progress as support begins. Developmental measurement supports care planning; diagnosis requires an appropriately qualified healthcare professional. under qualified clinician care; they are never the output of a school observation or an online check. With 4.95 lakh+ families served across 70+ centres, our team can also share a simple home–school plan so the same strategies follow your child everywhere. CONNECT THE ANSWER TO YOUR CHILD’S DAY
Something to notice. Something to discuss.
What to notice
Watch for persistent gaps between effort and results — bright, hard-working children who still avoid reading or writing, take far longer on homework, or grow distressed about school. Persistent struggle across a school term, not occasional bad days, is what warrants a developmental check.
In everyday life
Keep a simple one-page note of what you see at home — reading speed, spelling, sums, homework frustration. Take it to your next school meeting; specific examples get specific support faster than general worry.
Bring your observations and questions to your child’s professional. Choose activities that suit your child’s comfort, abilities and agreed plan.
Bring your questions to a first visitQuestions families ask
Does my child need a diagnosis before the school helps?
No. Many schools can offer in-class adjustments and small-group teaching straight away based on what teachers observe. A formal assessment, however, helps the school design an individualised plan and unlocks statutory accommodations such as extra time in exams for recognised specific learning disabilities.
What is an IEP?
An Individualised Education Plan is a written plan setting specific, reviewable goals for your child, the support the school will provide, and how progress will be checked. It is reviewed regularly so the support keeps pace with your child's needs.
Are exam accommodations really available in India?
Yes. Under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016, and CBSE and state board provisions, children with recognised specific learning disabilities can receive accommodations such as extra time, a scribe or reader, or a separate room. Your school or board can guide the documentation needed.
