How to arrange a scribe and extra time

What's commonly available

• A scribe to write answers the child dictates
• Extra (compensatory) time, typically 20 minutes per hour of exam
• A separate, quieter room; permission to use a computer, reader, or calculator where allowed
• Exemption from certain components (e.g. some boards relax third-language or specific paper rules for eligible children)

The steps
1. Get a recognised report or certificate — most boards accept a disability certificate from a government medical authority, or an assessment report from a recognised institution naming the condition (e.g. a [specific learning disability](/) such as dyslexia, or a physical or developmental condition).
2. Apply through the school — schools forward the request to the board with supporting documents. Ask your class teacher or principal for the exact form and deadline.
3. Apply early — for board exams (CBSE/ICSE/state), requests are often submitted alongside or soon after exam registration, months ahead.
4. Keep copies — a clear paper trail helps the same supports carry forward year to year and into competitive exams (NEET, JEE) and college.

Good to know: these supports are an entitlement, not a favour — and they don't mark your child as "lesser". They simply remove a barrier so the exam measures learning, not the disability.
