What Happens During Play Therapy Sessions?

Play therapy uses guided, child-led play as the main way a child learns, expresses feelings and builds skills. In a typical session a trained therapist follows the child's interests while gently weaving in goals for communication, emotions, behaviour and social skills, with simple ideas to continue at home. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care.

What Happens During Play Therapy Sessions? — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

When a child plays, they speak the language they know best — and in play therapy, that language becomes the path to growth, confidence and connection.

In short

Play therapy uses guided, child-led play as the main way a child learns, expresses feelings and builds new skills. In a typical session, a trained therapist follows your child's interests — toys, games, pretend play, sand or art — while gently weaving in goals for communication, emotions, behaviour, social skills or motor development. Because play is how children naturally make sense of their world, it feels like fun to them while real, purposeful work is happening underneath. Sessions are warm, unhurried and built around your child's strengths.

What a session usually looks like

  • Settling in — the therapist greets your child and offers familiar, inviting toys or activities so they feel safe and in control. Trust comes first.
  • Child-led play — your child chooses what to play with; the therapist follows their lead, observing how they explore, communicate and solve problems.
  • Gentle goal-weaving — within that play, the therapist introduces small, achievable challenges: taking turns, naming feelings, asking for help, building a tower, or practising a sound or word.
  • Modelling and joining in — the therapist plays alongside your child, modelling language, calmer responses or new ways to interact, rather than instructing from outside.
  • Closing and parent sharing — sessions wind down predictably, and the therapist shares what they noticed and a simple idea or two to carry into play at home.

The magic is that nothing feels like a test. Through repeated, joyful play your child practises the very skills — emotional, social, communicative or physical — that they find hardest, in a setting where they feel safe to try.

How it helps

Play therapy can support emotional regulation, social connection, communication, attention and behaviour. It is often used alongside other support such as speech or occupational therapy, with the play approach making each goal feel natural and motivating. You, as a parent, are warmly involved — because the best progress continues in everyday play at home.

What to watch

Notice how your child plays — whether they engage with toys, take turns, share attention with you, express feelings, or seem stuck repeating the same actions; these everyday observations help a therapist shape the right support.

Try this at home

Set aside ten unhurried minutes a day to play whatever your child chooses, following their lead without correcting — just join in, name what's happening and enjoy it. This simple ritual builds connection and confidence.

Frequently asked

Is play therapy just playing, or does it really help?

It looks like play because that is exactly how young children learn best — but a trained therapist is purposefully guiding each session towards goals for communication, emotions, behaviour or social skills. The fun is real, and so is the progress.

Will I be involved in my child's play therapy?

Yes. You are your child's most powerful support. The therapist shares what they observe and gives you simple ideas to weave into everyday play at home, so progress continues between sessions.

How long does a play therapy session last?

Sessions are kept to a comfortable length that suits your child's attention and energy, usually a structured period with settling-in, guided play and a calm close. Your child's therapist will set a rhythm that works for them.

What ages is play therapy suitable for?

Play-based approaches can support a wide range of ages, adapted to each child's developmental stage. A clinician at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre will recommend the right approach after a developmental assessment.
