At what age is the ADOS-2 developmental assessment used?
The ADOS-2 is a clinician-administered, play-based assessment used across a very wide age range — from toddlers around 12 months through childhood, adolescence and into adulthood. It is not one fixed test but five modules; a clinician selects the right one based on the child's age and language level. A dedicated Toddler Module covers very young children of roughly 12–30 months who are not yet using regular phrases.
Read the answer AnswerWhat is the ADOS-2 and what does it assess?
The ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, 2nd edition) is a structured, play- and conversation-based assessment a trained clinician uses to observe social communication, interaction and play in a standardised way. Its modules flex by age and language level, from non-verbal toddlers to fluent adults. It is one of the most widely used tools to inform an autism evaluation, but it is never used alone — it is always interpreted with developmental history and clinical judgement, and it does not by itself give a diagnosis.

How does the ADOS-2 compare with the AbilityScore developmental assessment?
The ADOS-2 is an autism-specific diagnostic observation that helps answer a focused diagnostic question, while the AbilityScore® is a broader clinician-administered developmental assessment that maps strengths and needs across many domains to set a baseline and guide therapy. They are complementary, not competing — one informs diagnosis, the other guides everyday progress. Both rely on clinician judgement combined with your child's history, and any diagnosis is confirmed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre.
Read the answer AnswerShould my child have an ADOS-2 assessment, and what does it involve?
The ADOS-2 is a gold-standard, clinician-administered observation used as part of an autism assessment, never on its own. It is a structured, play-based session lasting around 40–60 minutes that watches how your child communicates, interacts and plays. Whether your child needs one is decided by a clinician after a developmental review — it is always combined with your child's history and never used to label in isolation.
Read the answer AnswerADOS-2: indications, strengths and limits in early childhood
The ADOS-2 is a semi-structured, clinician-administered observation indicated when an autism concern warrants a standardised behavioural sample, with a Toddler Module from ~12 months. Its strengths are standardised 'presses', calibrated severity scores and reliability; its limits are reduced accuracy in very young, intellectually impaired or masking children and the fact that it is a single snapshot. It informs — never replaces — a multidisciplinary diagnosis, which at Pinnacle is formed only by a qualified clinician.
