Interests
How Interests Is Scored on the AbilityScore
On the AbilityScore®, Interests is understood by observing how your toddler engages with the world — the range, flexibility and shared quality of their curiosity — read warmly against their own baseline. It is not a tick-box test; only a qualified Pinnacle clinician interprets what it means.
Your toddler's flickers of curiosity — what they reach for, watch and return to — tell a richer story than any single number.
In short
On the AbilityScore®, Interests isn't a tick-box test — it's understood by watching how your toddler engages with the world: what catches their attention, how varied their play is, whether their curiosity is flexible or narrowly fixed, and how they share interest with you. A qualified Pinnacle clinician observes this in play, listens to your everyday stories, and reads it against your child's own baseline — not against another child. How Interests is looked at
For a toddler (12–36 months), interests are a window into social and play development. A clinician gently observes patterns such as:- Range and variety — does your child enjoy a spread of toys, people and activities, or return to the same one or two things repeatedly?
- Flexibility — can they shift from one play idea to another, or do they resist any change?
- Shared interest — do they bring things to show you, point, or look between an object and your face to share delight?
- Quality of engagement — is play exploratory and imaginative, or mostly lining-up, spinning or repetitive?
- Context — sensory preferences, temperament and recent experiences all shape what a toddler likes, so the clinician reads the whole picture, never one moment.
This is observed warmly over play and conversation, because curiosity shows itself best when a child feels safe.

What to watch
Seek a gentle professional look if your toddler shows very narrow, repetitive interests, rarely shares discoveries with you, resists any change in play, or seems uninterested in toys and people around their age.
Try this at home
Follow your toddler's lead: notice what they reach for, name it, and join their play. Gently introduce one new activity alongside a favourite to widen curiosity without pressure.
