YOUR QUESTION. A CLEARER NEXT STEP.
How to Apply for Government Disability Benefits in India
In India, government disability benefits flow from a UDID card, applied for online after obtaining a disability certificate from a notified government medical authority. The certificate records type and percentage of disability; the card unlocks pensions, scholarships, concessions and tax relief. Organised clinical and therapy records make certification faster and more accurate.

The paperwork can feel daunting — but a few clear steps, and a diagnosis certificate, open the door to support your family is entitled to.
In short
In India, most government disability benefits flow from a UDID card (Unique Disability ID), which you apply for online at the national UDID portal after obtaining a disability certificate from a notified government medical authority. The certificate records the type and percentage of disability; the UDID card then unlocks pensions, scholarships, travel concessions, tax relief and reserved scheme access. You can start the process at any age once a recognised condition is certified.
How to apply, step by step
- Get a disability certificate. Visit a government hospital or notified medical board (your district hospital or a designated medical authority). Conditions covered under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016 include intellectual disability, autism, cerebral palsy, hearing and speech impairment, and others. Carry the child's clinical reports and assessments.
- Register on the UDID portal. Create an account at swavlambancard.gov.in, fill the applicant details, upload a photo, address proof, identity proof and any existing medical documents.
- Attend the assessment. The application routes to a medical authority who confirms the type and percentage of disability and issues the certificate digitally.
- Receive your UDID card. Once approved, the e-card is downloadable and a physical card is dispatched. One card is valid nationwide.
- Apply for specific schemes. With the UDID, apply for disability pension (via your State Social Welfare department), the National Trust schemes (Niramaya health insurance, Disha early-intervention), education scholarships, and Income Tax relief under Sections 80DD and 80U.
Helpful to know
- Keep clinical reports organised. A clear developmental profile and therapy records make the medical board's job faster and the certification more accurate.
- Percentage matters. Many benefits have a threshold (often 40%+). The certificate's percentage is set by the medical authority, not by us.
- Renewals. Some certificates for children are time-bound and reviewed as the child grows — note the validity date.
- State variation. Pension amounts and extra state schemes differ across states; check your State Social Welfare or Disability Commissioner's office.

Something to notice. Something to discuss.
What to notice
Note the validity date on a child's disability certificate — paediatric certificates are often time-bound and reviewed as the child grows, so plan renewals before benefits lapse.
In everyday life
Keep a single folder — physical and digital — with the child's clinical reports, therapy summaries and ID proofs, so each scheme application and renewal is quick to assemble.
Bring your observations and questions to your child’s professional. Choose activities that suit your child’s comfort, abilities and agreed plan.

What is a UDID card and why do I need it?
The Unique Disability ID (UDID) is a single national card that records a person's certified disability. It serves as proof across India for pensions, scholarships, travel concessions, tax relief and reserved schemes, so you don't need separate documents for each benefit.
Where do I get the disability certificate?
From a government hospital or a notified medical authority — usually your district hospital or a designated medical board. They assess the type and percentage of disability and issue the certificate, which then supports your UDID application.
Can Pinnacle Blooms Network issue a disability certificate?
No. A disability certificate is issued only by a government-notified medical authority. We provide structured developmental profiles and detailed therapy records that support your application — Developmental measurement supports care planning; diagnosis requires an appropriately qualified healthcare professional. under qualified clinician care.
What tax benefits are available?
Under Indian Income Tax law, Sections 80DD and 80U offer deductions for dependants with disability or for the individual with disability, subject to the certified percentage. Check current rules with a tax adviser as thresholds may update.
