YOUR QUESTION. A CLEARER NEXT STEP.

At what age is the ASQ-3 used for a child?

THE SHORT ANSWER

The ASQ-3 (Ages & Stages Questionnaires, Third Edition) is a parent-completed developmental screening tool used for children from 1 month to 66 months of age — about 5½ years. It uses 21 age-specific questionnaires so the questions always match a child's stage, screening five areas: communication, gross motor, fine motor, problem solving and personal-social. It is a screen that flags whether a closer look may help, not a diagnosis.

One gentle questionnaire, completed by you, that meets your child where they are — from the first months of life through to starting school.

In short

The Ages & Stages Questionnaires, Third Edition (ASQ-3) is a parent-completed developmental screening tool used for children from 1 month to 66 months of age (about 5½ years). It comes as a series of age-specific questionnaires — 21 in total — so the questions always match your child's stage, from early infancy right up to the start of school. It is a screening tool that flags whether a child may benefit from a closer look — not a diagnosis.

How the age range works

Rather than one form for every child, ASQ-3 uses separate questionnaires at set age intervals — for example around 2, 4, 6, 9, 12 months and onward — so the developmental questions stay relevant as your child grows. Each questionnaire asks you, the parent, about everyday skills across five areas: communication, gross motor, fine motor, problem solving, and personal-social. Because parents see their child every day in familiar settings, your observations make this a wonderfully practical first step. The intervals are closer together in the early months, when development moves quickly, and a little wider as children grow. The full span runs from 1 month up to 66 months, which neatly covers the early-childhood window when timely support makes the biggest difference.

What a screen tells you — and what it doesn't

ASQ-3 is designed to be a screen, not a diagnosis. A result simply tells you whether your child is developing comfortably for their age or whether some areas might benefit from a closer professional look. A score that suggests follow-up is an invitation to understand more — never a label, and never a cause for alarm. Many children flagged by a screen go on to thrive, sometimes with a little targeted support, sometimes with none at all.

The Pinnacle way

This is general information, not a diagnosis — a clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under qualified clinician care, never from an app or form alone. If an ASQ-3 screen or your own watching raises a question, our team can map the whole picture across communication, motor and social skills and, where helpful, draw on speech therapy and other supports tailored to your child.

Trusted sources

CDC guidance on developmental monitoring and screening tools; the American Academy of Pediatrics and HealthyChildren on developmental surveillance through early childhood; WHO Nurturing Care Framework on early childhood development.

Next step — If you'd like a clearer picture of how your child is developing, book a developmental review and let our clinicians turn observations into a personalised plan.

CONNECT THE ANSWER TO YOUR CHILD’S DAY

Something to notice. Something to discuss.

What to notice

Whether your child is reaching everyday milestones for their age across communication, movement, fine-motor, problem solving and social skills — and whether a screening result suggests a closer professional look.

In everyday life

Note what your child does naturally during play and daily routines — pointing, babbling, stacking, sharing — so that if you complete an ASQ-3, your answers reflect their everyday best, not a one-off test moment.

Bring your observations and questions to your child’s professional. Choose activities that suit your child’s comfort, abilities and agreed plan.

Questions families ask

What is the full age range of the ASQ-3?

The ASQ-3 is used for children from 1 month to 66 months of age — roughly from early infancy to about 5½ years, just before formal schooling.

How many ASQ-3 questionnaires are there?

There are 21 age-specific questionnaires, set at intervals across infancy and early childhood, so the questions always suit your child's developmental stage.

Does the ASQ-3 give a diagnosis?

No. The ASQ-3 is a screening tool, not a diagnostic test. A result simply indicates whether a child may benefit from a closer professional assessment.

Who completes the ASQ-3?

Parents or caregivers complete it, because they observe the child every day in familiar settings — making it a practical, reliable first step.
