What is the CELF-P2 and what does it assess?

The Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals — Preschool-2 (CELF-P2) is a standardised, clinician-administered assessment of spoken language for young children, typically aged around 3 to 6 years. Through playful, child-friendly tasks it looks at how a child understands language (receptive skills) and how they use language to express themselves (expressive skills) — including vocabulary, sentence structure and following directions. It is a tool to map a child's language strengths and needs, not a label, and it is always interpreted by a qualified speech-language professional alongside the whole picture of the child.

What the CELF-P2 assesses

The CELF-P2 gathers a rounded view of early language through several short activities, often involving pictures, objects and simple games so the child stays engaged. Broadly, it looks at a child's ability to understand spoken language — such as following spoken directions, recognising the meaning of words and grasping how sentences are built — and their ability to use language — naming, describing, putting words together into grammatical sentences and recalling what they have heard. Many clinicians also use its observation and rating components to understand how a child uses language in everyday settings like play and conversation. The results help a therapist see whether a child's language is developing in step with their age, and exactly where targeted support could help most.
