Double-Sided Chalkboard & Whiteboard

Double-Sided Chalkboard & Whiteboard: Is It Right for My Child?

A double-sided chalkboard and whiteboard is a flip board with a chalk surface on one face and a dry-erase surface on the other. It is a safe, flexible, open-ended material that supports pre-writing, early literacy, joint attention and fine-motor skills for most children from toddlerhood onward, with simple safety choices for younger children.

A simple board that flips from chalk to dry-wipe can become one of the most-used learning tools in your home — but is it the right fit for your child?

In short

A double-sided chalkboard and whiteboard is exactly what it sounds like — one board with a chalk surface on one face and a dry-erase (marker) surface on the other, usually on an easel or wall mount. It is a low-cost, open-ended play and learning material that supports mark-making, early drawing, pre-writing strokes, letters and numbers, and shared back-and-forth play. For most children from toddlerhood through the early school years it is a safe, flexible choice — and it is especially useful for building hand strength, attention and the link between language and learning.

Why it can help your child

The value isn't the board itself — it's what your child does on it. A vertical surface (board on an easel or wall) is genuinely good for development:
  • Pre-writing and fine-motor skills — big arm and wrist movements at a vertical surface build the shoulder and hand stability that handwriting later needs.
  • Cognition and early literacy — drawing, copying shapes, matching letters and numbers, and "teaching teddy" all grow thinking and language together.
  • Joint attention and turn-taking — you draw, your child adds to it; this shared back-and-forth is powerful for communication.
  • Two textures, two experiences — chalk gives a different sensory feel and resistance from a smooth marker surface, useful for children who enjoy or need varied sensory input.

Is it right for your child? Choose a sturdy, non-tip board sized to your child's height, with non-toxic, dust-free chalk and child-safe markers. For very young children (under 3) supervise closely — chalk and marker caps are small-parts and mouthing risks. If your child finds chalk dust or squeak distressing, simply stick to the whiteboard side. There is no single "right" material for every child — the best material is the one your child willingly returns to and explores.

The Pinnacle way

A material like this supports development; it doesn't assess it. A clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under qualified clinician care — never from a product or an app. If you're unsure which materials match your child's current stage, a clinician can map that to a plan. Explore the double-sided chalkboard and whiteboard in context, see how occupational therapy builds pre-writing and fine-motor skills, and learn what the AbilityScore is and how it is established.

What to watch

Watch whether your child enjoys returning to the board, can make and copy marks, shapes or letters, and engages in shared turn-taking with you. Persistent avoidance of mark-making or difficulty holding a chalk or marker past the expected age is worth raising at a developmental check.

Try this at home

Stand the board upright on an easel or mount it on a wall at your child's height. Drawing on a vertical surface builds the shoulder and wrist strength that handwriting needs later — far more than a flat tabletop does.

Frequently asked

At what age can my child start using a double-sided chalkboard and whiteboard?

Many children begin enjoying big scribbles from around 18 months to 2 years with close supervision, and use it more purposefully for letters and numbers in the preschool and early school years. Choose dust-free chalk and child-safe markers, and supervise younger children because chalk pieces and marker caps are small-parts risks.

Is a chalkboard or a whiteboard better for my child?

Both have value. Chalk offers a different sensory feel and natural resistance that helps some children, while the whiteboard side is smooth, low-dust and easy to wipe. Having both on one board lets your child choose the surface that suits the moment, which is exactly why double-sided boards are so useful.

Will a chalkboard and whiteboard help with handwriting?

Used vertically, yes — it supports the foundations. Drawing and writing on an upright surface builds shoulder, wrist and hand strength and the visual-motor control that handwriting later draws on. It is one helpful tool among many, not a guaranteed handwriting programme.

My child avoids drawing on it completely. Should I be worried?

Not every child takes to every material, so first try the smoother whiteboard side, larger grips, or drawing together. If your child consistently avoids mark-making, struggles to hold chalk or a marker past the expected age, or this fits a wider pattern of concern, mention it at a developmental check with a clinician.
