An AbilityScore of 0–100 in Social Communication is a single warm scale showing how your child currently connects and communicates — sharing attention, taking turns, reading and sending social cues. Social communication (ICF d350 — conversation and use of communication) is about the back-and-forth of relating, not just words. When our clinicians look at this domain, they are observing things like:- Joint attention — does your child share a moment with you, glancing between you and a toy?
- Turn-taking — the gentle rhythm of "my turn, your turn" in play, sounds or conversation.
- Using and reading cues — gestures, eye contact, facial expressions, tone.
- Initiating and responding — starting an interaction and replying to others.
The band gives this a shared language so your family and your clinical team can talk about progress in the same terms. Crucially, the same number can mean different things at different ages, which is why it is always interpreted by a clinician who knows your child's stage and story — never read in isolation. The most valuable use of the score is as a baseline you can grow from: it shows where to begin and, over time, how far your child has travelled.
