YOUR QUESTION. A CLEARER NEXT STEP.
Your Child's Permanence AbilityScore: Next Steps
A Permanence AbilityScore® band is a clinician-administered snapshot of one cognitive skill, not a diagnosis or label. The next step is to review the band with your Pinnacle clinician, who places it in the context of your child's whole profile and builds a small, playful, home-friendly plan with periodic re-measurement. AbilityScore® is part of Pinnacle’s developmental assessment. Diagnosis, where needed, requires an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.

A single number is a starting point, never a verdict — your child's Permanence score is the first step on a clear, supported path forward.
In short
The AbilityScore® band for Permanence is a clinician-administered snapshot of how your child is developing one specific cognitive skill — the understanding that people and objects still exist even when out of sight. A score anywhere on the 0–100 range simply tells your clinical team where to begin and how much support to build in; it is not a label or a diagnosis. The next step is a calm conversation with your Pinnacle clinician to turn that number into a practical, child-led plan.
Making sense of the band
Object (and person) permanence is a foundational cognitive milestone — it underpins memory, problem-solving, secure attachment and later language. Where your child sits in the 0–100 band tells the clinician how emerging or established this skill is right now, so support can be pitched at exactly the right level:
- A lower band usually means the skill is still emerging, and your plan will focus on playful, repeated experiences that build the idea that things hidden are not things gone.
- A mid band suggests the skill is developing and benefits from gentle stretching into more complex situations.
- A higher band is reassuring and shifts the focus to consolidating and generalising the skill across everyday settings.
Crucially, a single domain score is read alongside the whole picture — your child's age, their other developmental strengths, and what you see at home. One number never tells the full story.
Your next steps
- Review with your clinician — sit down with the Pinnacle team who administered the assessment so the band is explained in plain language, in the context of your child's overall profile.
- Agree a small, specific plan — a few playful, repeatable activities woven into daily routines, with clear goals you can both track.
- Practise at home — peek-a-boo, hide-and-seek with favourite toys, and naming where people have gone all gently strengthen permanence.
- Re-measure over time — development is a moving picture; periodic re-assessment shows progress and keeps the plan accurate.

CONNECT THE ANSWER TO YOUR CHILD’S DAY
Something to notice. Something to discuss.
What to notice
Notice whether your child looks for a toy hidden under a cloth, searches for you when you step out of view, enjoys peek-a-boo, and remembers where favourite things are kept — these everyday moments show object and person permanence developing.
In everyday life
Play gentle peek-a-boo and hide-a-toy-under-a-cup games every day — letting your child find the hidden object teaches them that things out of sight still exist.
Bring your observations and questions to your child’s professional. Choose activities that suit your child’s comfort, abilities and agreed plan.
Bring your questions to a first visitQuestions families ask
Is a Permanence AbilityScore a diagnosis?
No. The AbilityScore® band is a clinician-administered snapshot of one developing cognitive skill. It is never a diagnosis or a label, and it is always read alongside your child's full developmental picture by a qualified clinician.
What does object permanence actually mean?
It is your child's growing understanding that people and objects still exist even when they can't be seen, heard or touched. It is a foundational skill that supports memory, problem-solving, secure attachment and later language.
What should I do if my child's band is low?
A lower band simply means the skill is still emerging. Your Pinnacle clinician will agree a few playful, repeatable activities — like peek-a-boo and hide-and-seek with toys — woven into daily routines, with clear goals and periodic re-measurement to track progress.
How is the AbilityScore measured?
It is a structured assessment administered by a qualified clinician at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, never from an app or online form. It places one skill in the context of your child's age and overall strengths.
