Problem-Solving

How Problem-Solving Is Scored on the AbilityScore

On the AbilityScore, Problem-Solving is measured by a clinician observing how your toddler explores objects, understands cause and effect, uses simple means to reach a goal, and tries new approaches when stuck. It is a clinician-administered structured assessment that reads your child against their own baseline — not an online number, and only confirmed at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre.

When your toddler tips a cup, turns a toy, or works out how to reach a favourite snack — that quiet, busy thinking is problem-solving, and it can be gently measured.

In short

On the AbilityScore®, Problem-Solving is measured by a clinician observing how your toddler thinks through everyday challenges — exploring objects, working out cause and effect, using a tool to reach a goal, and trying new approaches when the first one doesn't work. It is a clinician-administered structured assessment, not a single test or a number you can generate at home. Your child is read against their own developmental baseline, never ranked against other children.

How Problem-Solving is read

For a child aged roughly 12–36 months, problem-solving shows up in play and daily moments, so a clinician watches for things like:
  • Cause and effect — does your child press, shake or turn a toy to make something happen?
  • Means-end thinking — pulling a cloth to reach a toy, or using a stool to get higher.
  • Object exploration — fitting shapes, stacking, opening containers, finding a hidden toy.
  • Persistence and flexibility — trying a new way when the first attempt doesn't work.
  • Imitation and learning — watching, then copying a small sequence to solve a task.

The clinician gathers this through structured play, gentle tasks and your everyday observations — building a picture across the visit rather than from one rushed moment. We describe the assessment, never the inner scoring — that protects its integrity and your child.

What to watch

Mention it at your next check if, by around 2 years, your toddler rarely explores how toys work, doesn't try to reach or retrieve a wanted object, or gives up the moment a simple task isn't immediate — alongside any wider gaps in play or understanding.

Try this at home

Offer gentle, solvable challenges: place a favourite toy just out of reach, or use a clear container with a loose lid. Pause before helping — give your toddler a few seconds to puzzle it out, then praise the effort, not just the success.

Frequently asked

Can I score my toddler's problem-solving at home?

No — the AbilityScore is a clinician-administered structured assessment. You can certainly observe and encourage problem-solving play at home, but a meaningful read and any plan are formed only by a qualified clinician at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre.

Is my child compared to other children?

No. The AbilityScore reads your child against their own developmental baseline, focusing on their growth over time rather than ranking them against others.

At what age can Problem-Solving be assessed?

It can be observed meaningfully across the toddler years, roughly 12 to 36 months, when cause-and-effect play, exploration and goal-directed thinking naturally emerge.
