Engagement is scored on the AbilityScore® through structured, play-based observation of how your toddler shares attention, responds to people, and stays involved in back-and-forth moments. It is not a single test or a number you can find online — a qualified Pinnacle clinician watches real interactions, builds a picture against your child's own baseline, and turns it into a warm, practical plan. There is no pass or fail.

How engagement is read

For a toddler (roughly 12–36 months), engagement lives in everyday social moments, so a clinician looks at:

• Shared attention — does your child look between a toy and you, point to show, or follow your gaze?
• Responsiveness — when you call their name, smile or offer a game, do they turn, brighten and respond?
• Back-and-forth — can your child sustain a simple to-and-fro, like rolling a ball or peek-a-boo, for a few turns?
• Initiation — does your child start interactions, bringing you a toy or seeking you out to share delight?
• Staying with it — how long they stay involved before drifting, and what helps them re-engage.

When to seek a look

If your toddler rarely makes eye contact, seldom shares attention or points, doesn't respond to their name by 12–18 months, or seems hard to draw into simple games, a gentle professional look now is worthwhile. Early understanding builds confidence and connection.
