Enhanced Pretend

How to Practise Enhanced Pretend Play at Home

Enhanced Pretend means following your child's lead in play and then adding one small new idea — a role, a problem to solve, or a feeling to name. Use everyday objects, simple story problems and warm, child-led ten-minute sessions to grow imagination, language and social thinking at home.

Enhanced Pretend Play at Home — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Pretend play is where your child rehearses the whole world — feeding a teddy, flying to the moon, running a little shop on the kitchen floor. "Enhanced Pretend" simply means you, the parent, gently stretch that play a little further each time.

In short

Enhanced Pretend is a play-based way to grow your child's imagination, language and social thinking by following their lead and then adding one small new idea — a new role, a problem to solve, or a feeling to name. You don't need toys or training; you need ten unhurried minutes, a willingness to play along, and the patience to let your child drive. Below are simple home activities you can start today.

Activities you can do at home

Start by following, then add one thing
  • Sit at your child's level and copy what they're already doing — if they feed a doll, you feed one too. Once you're playing together, add a tiny twist: "Oh no, teddy spilled his milk! What do we do?"
  • Offer a new role: "Shall I be the customer at your shop?" Roles invite back-and-forth talk and turn-taking.

Use everyday objects as "something else"

  • A wooden spoon becomes a microphone, a box becomes a car, a blanket becomes the sea. Using one object to stand for another is a big imagination step — celebrate it.
  • Keep a small "pretend box" of safe odds and ends: scarves, empty containers, old phones.

Add a simple story problem

  • Introduce a gentle challenge: "The bus has broken down — how will the animals get to the party?" Problems give your child a reason to plan, talk and negotiate.
  • Let them solve it their way, even if it's silly. The thinking matters more than the answer.

Name feelings inside the play

  • "The baby doll looks sad — maybe she misses her mummy." Putting words to emotions in pretend helps children understand real ones.

Keep it warm and child-led

  • Follow their pace, pause often, and resist correcting. If they lose interest, that's fine — short and joyful beats long and pushed.

Why this helps

Pretend play builds language, sequencing, social reasoning and emotional understanding all at once. By adding one small idea at a time — a new role, a problem, a feeling — you stretch the play just beyond where your child is comfortable, which is exactly where learning happens. If your child rarely pretends, finds it hard to join your ideas, or much prefers lining up or repeating the same action, that's worth a relaxed developmental check rather than a worry.

The Pinnacle way

Every child's play looks different, and a clinical AbilityScore® and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre under qualified clinician care — never from a home activity or a checklist. Our therapists can show you how to weave Enhanced Pretend into daily routines and, where helpful, pair it with speech therapy to grow language alongside imagination.

What to watch

If your child rarely pretends, can't join your play ideas, or strongly prefers lining up or repeating the same action over many months, treat it as a reason for a relaxed developmental check rather than a worry.

Try this at home

Once a day, join whatever your child is already playing and add just one small idea — a new role, a problem, or a feeling. One twist is enough.

Frequently asked

What age should my child start pretend play?

Simple pretend, like feeding a doll, often appears around 18 months to 2 years, growing into richer role-play by 3 to 4. Children vary widely, so follow your child's interest rather than the calendar. If pretend play hasn't emerged by around 2.5 to 3 years, a relaxed developmental check is sensible.

What if my child ignores my pretend ideas?

Start by following their play rather than introducing your own. Copy what they're doing first, build a few minutes of shared fun, then add just one tiny new idea. If joining or shared play stays very hard over time, it's worth discussing with a clinician.

Do I need special toys for Enhanced Pretend?

Not at all. Everyday objects — spoons, boxes, scarves, empty containers — work beautifully, and using one object to stand for another is itself a valuable imagination step. Your warm attention matters far more than any toy.

How long should a pretend play session last?

Ten unhurried minutes is plenty. Short, joyful and child-led beats long and pushed. If your child loses interest sooner, that's perfectly fine — stop while it's still fun.
