How to Practise Dynamic Tummy at Home With Your Child

Dynamic Tummy turns tummy time into active play — adding gentle movement, reaching and rolling to build your child's neck, shoulder and core strength. Start with short, happy sessions several times a day, always supervised, and grow as your child gets stronger. A clinician can tailor it to your child's stage.

Dynamic Tummy at Home: Active Play for Strength — Ask Pinnacle, the Child Development Kośa

Tummy time doesn't have to be still — when you add gentle movement, you turn it into your baby's first full-body workout.

In short

Dynamic Tummy means making tummy time active and playful by adding gentle movement, reaching and rolling so your child builds neck, shoulder and core strength. Start with short sessions of a few minutes, several times a day, and grow from there as your child gets stronger and happier on their tummy. Always supervise, and keep it joyful — a calm, smiling baby learns best.

How to work on it at home

Set the scene
  • Choose a firm, clear floor surface with a thin mat or blanket.
  • Pick a happy, alert time — not right after a feed and not when your child is tired.
  • Get down to their level so your face becomes the most interesting thing to lift up for.

Make it dynamic — add movement and reach

  • Place a favourite toy slightly out of reach and slowly move it side to side so your child turns their head and shifts weight.
  • Roll a small textured ball just ahead so they push up to track and reach for it.
  • Use a rolled towel under the chest for support, then gently lower it as strength grows.
  • Try "aeroplane" laps — your child lying tummy-down across your reclined legs while you sway gently.
  • Encourage reaching across the midline (toy moved from one side to the other) to wake up both sides of the body.

Build it up gently

  • Begin with 2–3 minutes and stop while they're still content.
  • Aim for several short bursts spread through the day rather than one long stretch.
  • Celebrate every push-up and head-lift with smiles and your voice — connection fuels effort.

If your child consistently dislikes tummy time, push only to one side, or isn't lifting their head as you'd expect for their age, it's worth a friendly developmental check.

What to watch

Watch if your child strongly resists tummy time beyond a few weeks of trying, always turns or pushes to only one side, or isn't lifting and holding their head as expected for their age — these are reasons for a friendly developmental check.

Try this at home

Get face-to-face on the floor during tummy time — your smiling face slightly out of reach is the best motivator for your baby to push up and hold their head.

Frequently asked

How long should each Dynamic Tummy session be?

Start with just 2–3 minutes and stop while your child is still happy. Several short bursts across the day work far better than one long session, and you can gradually extend the time as your child grows stronger.

What if my child cries during tummy time?

A little protest is normal at first. Get down to their level, use toys and your voice, and keep sessions short and positive. If your child consistently distresses or refuses for several weeks, a developmental check can help you find a gentler, tailored approach.

When can I start Dynamic Tummy with my baby?

Supervised tummy play can begin from the early weeks, building up as your baby gains head control. Always keep sessions awake, supervised, and on a firm surface — never during sleep. A clinician can confirm what's right for your child's stage.
