In India, a child on the Autism Spectrum can receive a legal disability certificate (often called a UDID card) under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, which recognises autism as a disability. The certificate is issued by a government-notified medical authority after a clinical assessment, and it unlocks benefits like school accommodations, scholarships, travel concessions and reservations in certain schemes.

How the certificate works

What it is — The Unique Disability ID (UDID) is a national disability certificate. Autism is one of the recognised conditions, so a confirmed diagnosis makes your child eligible.

Who issues it — Only a government-notified medical board or authority (usually at a district hospital or designated government medical college) can issue the certificate. Private diagnoses, including any at a Pinnacle centre, support your application but the legal certificate itself comes from the notified authority.

How to apply — Most families now apply online through the national UDID portal and then attend an in-person assessment at the designated hospital. You will typically need your child's birth proof, photographs, identity documents and any existing diagnostic reports.
