Cerebral Palsy and Global Developmental Delay are different. CP is a group of conditions affecting movement and posture, caused by an early difference in the brain that controls muscles. Global Developmental Delay is a broader description for young children who are slower than expected across several areas of development at once — movement, speech, thinking and social skills. The two can overlap, but CP is mainly about how the body moves, while GDD is about being behind in many areas together. Neither is a verdict, and early support helps children progress.

*Two children may look similar early on — but Cerebral Palsy and Global Developmental Delay describe different things, and knowing the difference helps your child get the right support.*

## In short
**Cerebral Palsy (CP)** is a group of conditions affecting movement and posture, caused by a difference in how the brain that controls muscles developed — most often before or around birth. **Global Developmental Delay (GDD)** is a broader description used in young children who are developing more slowly than expected across *several* areas at once — such as movement, speech, thinking and social skills. In simple terms: CP is mainly about **how the body moves**, while GDD is about being **behind in many areas of development together**. The two can overlap — a child with CP may also have developmental delays — but they are not the same thing.

## How they differ in everyday life
With **Cerebral Palsy**, parents often notice movement-related signs: stiff or floppy muscles, favouring one side of the body, unusual posture, difficulty with sitting, crawling or walking, or trouble with feeding and hand control. The underlying brain difference does not worsen over time, though how it shows up can change as a child grows.

With **Global Developmental Delay**, the picture is wider — a child may be slower to reach milestones across language, play, problem-solving and motor skills together. GDD is usually a description for younger children while the full reasons are still being understood; sometimes a clearer cause or diagnosis emerges later. Importantly, neither term is a verdict — both are starting points for support, and many children make meaningful progress with the right, early help.

## When to seek a review
If your child is not meeting movement milestones, feels unusually stiff or floppy, strongly favours one hand very early, or is behind across several areas of development, arrange a developmental review. Early support protects a child's progress and confidence.

## The Pinnacle way
This is general information, not a diagnosis — a clinical [AbilityScore®](/ask/what-is-the-abilityscore-and-how-is-it-calculated) and any diagnosis are formed only at a Pinnacle Blooms Network centre, under qualified clinician care, never from an app or form. Our team looks at the whole child across movement, communication and play, then builds an individual plan that may draw on [occupational therapy](https://www.pinnacleblooms.org/best-occupational-therapy-center-india-proven-improvement-rate) and other supports. **Next step —** If you are unsure whether your child's signs point to movement or to broader development, book a developmental review to understand the whole picture and start any helpful support early.
