In India, children aged 6–18 with a recognised disability have a legal right to free, inclusive education under the RPwD Act 2016 and RTE Act 2009 — schools cannot refuse admission, and your child is entitled to reasonable accommodations, accessible facilities and exam concessions. A disability certificate and UDID card unlock scholarships and benefits.

*Every child has the right to learn alongside their peers — and in India, that right is written into law, not left to chance.*

## In short
Your child with a disability has a clear legal right to free, inclusive education in India. Under the **Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016** and the **Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009**, children aged 6–18 with any of 21 recognised disabilities are entitled to free schooling, reasonable accommodations, and the support they need to learn in a regular ('neighbourhood') school. Schools cannot refuse admission on grounds of disability.

## What your child is entitled to
**Admission and inclusion**
- Free education in a neighbourhood school from age 6 to 18 — no school may deny admission because of your child's disability.
- The choice of inclusive (mainstream) schooling, with support, rather than automatic placement in a separate setting.

**Reasonable accommodations and support**
- Adaptations to teaching, the classroom and materials to suit how your child learns.
- Access to assistive aids, learning materials in accessible formats, and a barrier-free, accessible building.
- Support such as scribes, extra time, and exemptions in examinations where appropriate.

**Individualised learning**
- A learning plan suited to your child's pace and strengths, with the goal of progress, not exclusion.
- Transport and other facilities to make daily attendance possible.

To claim several of these benefits, a child usually needs a **disability certificate** (issued by a notified medical authority) and a **UDID card** (Unique Disability ID). These open the door to scholarships, fee benefits and examination concessions.

## How to put these rights into practice
1. **Approach your neighbourhood school** and ask for admission — keep a written record.
2. **Obtain a disability certificate and UDID card** if you don't yet have one.
3. **Request a written accommodations plan** and meet the teacher to agree on supports.
4. **If admission is refused or support withheld**, you may approach the District/State Disability Commissioner or the school authority in writing.
