Between 3 and 7 years, children are still mastering speech sounds, and being unclear at times is normal — later sounds like r, s, th and l take longer. A 3-year-old is understood by familiar adults most of the time, and by about 4 most people can follow them. Seek a speech check if your child is much harder to understand than peers, is very frustrated, drops sounds they once used, or has other language or hearing concerns. This is early opportunity, not a diagnosis — and a hearing check is often a sensible first step.

*Every child finds their sounds at their own pace — noticing the wobbly ones and asking gently is loving, attentive parenting.*

## In short
Between 3 and 7 years, children are still building pronunciation — many sounds (like *r*, *s*, *th*, *l*) come in later, and being hard to understand at times is very normal early on. As a rough guide, a 3-year-old is understood by familiar adults most of the time, and by about 4 most people can follow your child's speech even if some sounds aren't perfect yet. If your child is much harder to understand than other children their age, gets very frustrated, or has dropped sounds they once used, a gentle speech check is wise — this is reassurance and early opportunity, not a diagnosis.

## What to watch at 3–7 years
Most unclear speech at this age is simply development in progress. Helpful flags that deserve a speech therapist's calm look include:

- **Hard to understand** — by 4 years, unfamiliar people struggle to follow most of what your child says.
- **Frustration** — your child gives up, points, or gets upset because they aren't understood.
- **Many missing sounds** — leaving off the starts or ends of words, or replacing lots of sounds (e.g. "tat" for "cat").
- **Travelling with other differences** — a small vocabulary, short sentences, trouble following instructions, or not seeming to hear well.
- **Losing skills** — words or sounds once used clearly that have faded.

The aim isn't worry — it's turning small questions into early support, which works beautifully at this age.

## When to act
If your child is much less clear than peers, is frustrated by it, or speech delay travels with language or hearing concerns, arrange a speech and developmental check now rather than waiting. A hearing check is often the sensible first step too. What you notice every day is valuable clinical information.
