Answer

How the PEDI compares with the AbilityScore developmental assessment

The PEDI and AbilityScore® both measure functional abilities but answer different questions. The PEDI focuses on self-care, mobility and social function for young children with disabilities, often via structured parent interview. The AbilityScore® is a clinician-administered structured assessment mapping a child across many developmental domains against their own baseline to guide therapy. They complement each other, and any diagnosis comes only from a qualified Pinnacle clinician.

Answer

Should my child have a PEDI assessment, and what does it involve?

The PEDI is a clinician-administered assessment of a child's everyday functional skills — self-care, mobility and social function — capturing both what your child can do and how much help they need, not intelligence or a diagnosis. It is most useful for setting a clear baseline and tracking progress over time. Whether it suits your child is decided with your Pinnacle clinician, and any diagnosis is formed only at a centre under qualified care.

PEDI: indications, strengths and limits in early childhood

The PEDI is indicated for measuring everyday functional capability and caregiver assistance in children roughly 6 months to 7.5 years (PEDI-CAT extends further), across self-care, mobility and social function. Its strength is ecological, function-focused profiling well suited to cerebral palsy, developmental delay and acquired injury; its limits are informant reliance, classic-version floor effects in young children, and that it is functional rather than diagnostic.
