# If one child has School Readiness Gap, can my next child have it too?

School Readiness Gap is not a single inherited condition, so one child having it does not mean a sibling will. Siblings share genes and home environment, which can modestly raise the chance of a similar pattern, but readiness is shaped largely by early talk, play, routine and timely support — all of which you can influence. AbilityScore® is part of Pinnacle’s developmental assessment. Diagnosis, where needed, requires an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.

*If one child arrived at school day not quite ready, it's natural to wonder about the next — but readiness is something we build, not something simply handed down.*

## In short
School Readiness Gap is **not a single inherited condition** — it describes a child arriving at the start of formal schooling without the everyday skills (language, attention, self-care, social play, early pre-academic abilities) yet in place. While families do share genes *and* a home environment, a gap in one child does **not** mean your next child will have it. Most of what shapes readiness — early talk, play, routine and timely support — is something you can actively influence, and early help works.

## What actually shapes readiness
School readiness grows from many threads woven together, not from one cause:

- **Shared environment** — siblings often grow up with similar routines, screen habits, language exposure and play opportunities. The good news: these are the very things that respond beautifully to small changes.
- **Inherited tendencies** — some developmental traits (such as a slower start with speech, or attention differences) can run in families, which may modestly raise the chance a sibling shows a similar pattern — but it is a *tendency*, never a certainty.
- **Each child is their own person** — temperament, birth history, health and timing all differ. Many siblings of a child with a readiness gap reach school perfectly prepared.

Because you now know what readiness looks like, your next child often has an *advantage* — you can nurture language, play and independence early and watch development with informed, gentle eyes.

## When to seek a check
There is no need to wait and worry. Seek a developmental check if, as your next child grows, you notice they are slow to talk or follow simple instructions, struggle to play alongside other children, find it very hard to sit, attend or separate from you, or are not managing simple self-care by the year before school. A check is reassurance as much as it is action.

## The Pinnacle way
AbilityScore® is part of Pinnacle’s developmental assessment. Diagnosis, where needed, requires an appropriately qualified healthcare professional — never from an app, a checklist or a sibling's history. Our clinician-administered assessment looks at each child individually across the skills that matter for school, so support is shaped to *that* child.
