# If one child has Emotional & Behavioural Difficulties, can my next child have it too?

Having one child with emotional and behavioural difficulties does not mean your next child will have them too. Shared temperament, genes and home environment can raise the chance, but never make it certain, and each child develops differently. Early support and a warm, predictable home soften any inherited tendency. AbilityScore® is part of Pinnacle’s developmental assessment. Diagnosis, where needed, requires an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.

*If one of your children has emotional and behavioural difficulties, it is natural to wonder about the next — and the honest, reassuring answer is that there is no certainty either way.*

## In short
There is no rule that says a younger sibling *will* have the same emotional and behavioural difficulties (EBD). Family patterns can make some children a little more likely to struggle — through a mix of shared temperament, genes and the home environment — but every child is their own person, and many siblings develop quite differently. The most powerful thing you can do is offer each child early support and a warm, predictable home, which softens almost any inherited tendency.

## Understanding the family picture
Emotional and behavioural difficulties are not a single inherited condition like eye colour. They arise from many threads woven together:
- **Temperament and genes** — some children are simply born more sensitive, more intense or more easily overwhelmed, and these traits can run in families. This raises the *chance*, not the *certainty*, of difficulties.
- **Shared environment** — siblings often grow up amid the same stresses, routines and relationships, so similar patterns can appear for reasons that have nothing to do with genes.
- **Each child's own path** — birth order, individual experiences, friendships and the support a child receives all shape how they manage feelings and behaviour. A younger sibling may be calmer, or may simply express things in their own way.

So a family history is best seen as a gentle reason to *watch warmly and act early* — not a verdict. Knowing what to look for means you can support your next child sooner, which itself improves the outlook enormously.

## When to seek a check
For any child, seek a developmental and emotional check if you notice persistent big emotions that are hard to settle, frequent meltdowns well beyond what you'd expect for their age, ongoing trouble with friendships or separation, sleep or appetite changes alongside low mood, or behaviour that is distressing for your child or family. Trust your parental instinct — an early conversation is always worthwhile and never causes harm.

## The Pinnacle way
AbilityScore® is part of Pinnacle’s developmental assessment. Diagnosis, where needed, requires an appropriately qualified healthcare professional — never from an app, a checklist or a family history alone. If you'd like reassurance about either child, our clinicians build a warm, individual [emotional and behavioural profile](/ask/what-is-the-abilityscore-and-how-is-it-calculated) and a plan that fits each child. You can explore gentle, play-based [behavioural and emotional support](/behavioural-therapy) or simply start with a general developmental conversation at our [home page](/).

**Next step —** Worried about your next child too? [Book a reassuring developmental check with a Pinnacle clinician](/behavioural-therapy).

This is general information, not a diagnosis — individual assessment and diagnosis require an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.
