# How do I explain Autism Spectrum to my child?

Explain autism to your child simply and warmly as a difference, not a fault: every brain works in its own way, and an autistic brain notices, feels and communicates a little differently. Lead with strengths, match their age, follow their questions and reassure them they are loved and whole. AbilityScore® is part of Pinnacle’s developmental assessment. Diagnosis, where needed, requires an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.

*Telling your child about autism — their own, or a sibling's, or a friend's — can be one of the kindest, most freeing conversations you'll ever have.*

## In short
Explain autism simply, warmly and as a difference — not a fault. Use plain, age-appropriate words: every brain works in its own way, and an autistic brain notices, feels and communicates a little differently. Keep it positive, factual and short, follow your child's questions, and reassure them they are loved and whole exactly as they are. There is no single perfect script — your calm, accepting tone matters more than the exact words.

## How to have the conversation
- **Lead with strengths and difference, not deficit.** Try: "Everyone's brain is different. Yours is wired in a special way — it helps you notice things others miss, and sometimes makes busy or loud places feel really big."
- **Match their age.** For a young child, keep it concrete and short — link it to things they know ("That's why headphones help when it's noisy"). For an older child, you can name *autism* directly and explain it's lifelong and part of who they are.
- **Normalise and connect.** Mention that lots of people are autistic, including people they may admire. Difference is part of being human.
- **Answer the question they actually asked.** Children often want one small fact, not a lecture. Pause, let them lead, and it's fine to say "That's a great question — let's find out together."
- **Reassure, every time.** "This doesn't change how much we love you. You are exactly who you're meant to be."
- **For explaining a sibling's or friend's autism:** focus on empathy — "Their brain works differently, so they show feelings and play in their own way. Here's how we can be a good friend to them."

Let it be an ongoing, open chat rather than one big "talk" — children process in layers, and your openness tells them this is always a safe thing to ask about.

## Trusted sources
WHO ICD-11 (6A02, autism spectrum disorder); CDC "Learn the Signs. Act Early."; the American Academy of Pediatrics via HealthyChildren.org; NICE guidance on autism recognition; and NIMHANS clinical resources — all describe autism as a lifelong neurodevelopmental difference best understood through acceptance and strengths.
