# How do I explain Attachment Difficulties to my child?

You explain attachment difficulties to your child with warm, simple, blame-free words that name the feeling rather than a fault, reassure them they are loved and safe, match the explanation to their age, and repeat it gently and often. AbilityScore® is part of Pinnacle’s developmental assessment. Diagnosis, where needed, requires an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.

*When a child feels unsure about closeness and trust, the right words — gentle, honest and full of warmth — can help them feel safe enough to lean in.*

## In short
You explain attachment difficulties to your child in **simple, warm, blame-free language** that names the feeling, not a fault. Tell them that everyone needs help learning to feel close and safe, that big feelings about trust and goodbyes are normal, and that you and a kind helper are working *with* them to make those feelings easier. Keep it short, match it to their age, and repeat the reassurance often — children learn safety through gentle repetition, not one big talk.

## How to say it
- **Name the feeling, not a label.** Try "Sometimes it feels hard to know if people will stay close — and that's okay. We can practise feeling safe together." Avoid diagnostic words that may worry them.
- **Reassure first, always.** "You are loved. I am not going anywhere. We will figure out these big feelings as a team." Safety is the message under every word.
- **Match their age.** For little ones, use play, cuddles and a favourite soft toy to act out goodbyes and happy reunions. For older children, you can say more — that some children's brains learned early on to be extra careful about trusting, and that this can get easier with practice and support.
- **Keep it short and repeat it.** One or two warm sentences, returned to often, land far better than a long explanation.
- **Welcome their questions.** "Is something wrong with me?" deserves a clear, loving "No — your feelings make sense, and we're helping them feel easier."
- **Show, don't only tell.** Predictable routines, calm goodbyes and warm hellos *prove* your words. Trust is built through what a child experiences, again and again.

## When to seek a check
If your child struggles to seek or accept comfort, seems unusually withdrawn or, conversely, overly familiar with strangers, has very intense reactions to separation, or these patterns persist and affect daily life, a developmental check helps. A clinician can tell apart a child who simply needs more settling time from one who would benefit from targeted, relationship-focused support.
