# How common is Prematurity-Related Developmental Risk in children?

Prematurity is common — about 1 in 10 babies worldwide is born preterm, and India has among the highest numbers globally. Most premature babies thrive, but being born early raises the chance of developmental differences, and that risk rises the earlier and smaller the baby. Using corrected age and attending follow-up helps spot any needs early. AbilityScore® is part of Pinnacle’s developmental assessment. Diagnosis, where needed, requires an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.

*A baby who arrives early carries a little extra developmental risk — but knowing this early means you can give their development every advantage from the start.*

## In short
Prematurity is common — globally around **1 in 10 babies (about 10%)** is born preterm (before 37 weeks), and India sees one of the highest numbers of preterm births in the world. Most premature babies grow up to thrive, but being born early does raise the chance of developmental differences in areas like movement, speech, attention and learning — and that chance rises the earlier and smaller a baby is born. The good news: with watchful follow-up and early support, most of these risks can be spotted soon and gently addressed.

## Understanding the risk
Not every premature baby will face developmental challenges — many catch up beautifully, especially babies born only a few weeks early ("late preterm"). Risk is best thought of as a *gradient*:
- **Late preterm (34–36 weeks)** — usually mild risk; most develop typically with routine monitoring.
- **Very preterm (28–31 weeks)** and **extremely preterm (under 28 weeks)** — higher chance of differences in motor skills, speech and language, attention, learning and coordination.
- A low birth weight, time in neonatal intensive care, or breathing difficulties at birth can add to the picture.

A helpful habit for parents: use your baby's **corrected age** (age from the due date, not the birth date) when looking at milestones in the first two years — an early baby is simply working to a different clock.

## When to seek a check
Most premature babies are enrolled in a follow-up programme — do attend those reviews. Beyond that, seek a developmental check if, by corrected age, your child is not meeting movement, communication or play milestones; if you notice stiffness or floppiness, persistent feeding trouble, or limited eye contact and response to sound; or simply if something feels off to you. Early observation is reassurance, not alarm.
